GREEN BAY, Wis. --- The first win of the season came quick for the Green Bay volleyball team, which swept IUPUI 3-0 at the Kress Center on Monday evening. GB (1-2) won the opening set quite convincingly 25-12, before winning the next 25-18 and 25-17 to secure the win.
The Phoenix was much more efficient all around, hitting .278 as a team and holding IUPUI (0-3) to a negative percentage with 19 errors to only 17 kills. GB hit .316 in the final set, putting away the Jaguars in the third home match of four in a row to open the season.
Alexandra Zakutney and
Iro Chounta paced the Phoenix attack, both finishing with 10 kills while also tallying seven and six digs respectively. Zakutney converted 10 of her 22 swings, good for a .273 clip while hitting a team-best four aces as well.
The Phoenix finished with 10 aces as a team, with Chounta adding three and
Annelise Sparks putting in two. sparks led the team defensively with nine digs.Â
Freshman setter
Addy Karmik ran the offense well all match, finishing with 32 assists and seven digs, while adding a pair of kills.
Rylee Boyd added seven kills and
Kristen Paulus finished with five. Boyd hit a scoring .600 clip, hammering home seven of her 10 swings.Â
All told, GB held a 38-17 edge in kills and 7-3 advantage in blocks.Â
IUPUI was led by Emily Alan with six kills and Madeline Haines with four.Â
GB and IUPUI will play the second leg back at the Kress Center tomorrow at 3 p.m. CT
