CLEVELAND, Ohio (GreenBayPhoenix.com) -- Green Bay scored twice at Cleveland State on Thursday afternoon, as the Phoenix secured three points and a 2-1 victory in overtime.
Villi Kaldal put the Phoenix in front in the 24th minute after a centering pass from
Bernard Assibey Rhule found its target. After a touch, Kaldal was able to send the ball into the back of the net for the first score of the season.
Cleveland State knotted things up only moments later after a near clear from the Phoenix defense stayed in CSU's attacking third and was sent into the net by the Vikings' Pablo Kawecki.
After both teams were held scoreless in the second half, the teams headed to overtime. No winner was decided and the subsequent second overtime followed.
With time winding down and the match seemingly destined for a draw, a takeaway at midfield gave the Phoenix hope.
Kaldal drove on a diagonal toward goal and nearly found mesh for the second time, but his shot was denied. However, the rebound deflected into the center of the pitch and was easily dispatched into the vacant net to close the match from the left foot of Bernard Assibey-Rhule.
Kaldal and Assibey Rhule each notched one goal and one assist. Goalkeeper
Jamison Yoder secured four saves in the win.
Green Bay heads to IUPUI next Wednesday with kickoff slated for noon (CT).
