HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. --- The Green Bay women's basketball team made its final four free throws inside the final minute of a one possession game at Northern Kentucky on Friday afternoon, holding on for the 63-56 victory at the BB&T Arena. The Phoenix (9-4 HL) handed the Norse (6-1 HL) its first league loss of the season, which was coming off a sweep in Milwaukee last weekend.
GB led 59-56 with 40 seconds left in the game, and after the teams exchanged a pair of empty possessions, Phoenix guard
Cassie Schiltz made four-straight free throws and the defense forced a pair of long-range misses.
GB did shoot almost 50 percent, making 25 of its 51 attempts, including 5 of its 11 3-point attempts. The 11 attempts marked the fewest by GB in a game this season, while the defense held IUPUI to only 7 makes on 28 attempts on the other end. Both teams finished with 14 points in the fourth quarter after GB led by eight at the half.
Caitlyn Hibner led the scoring efforts for GB, finishing with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds.
Sydney Levy added 12 points off the bench, grabbing six rebounds and going 4-for-8 from the field.
The Phoenix defense held NKU to just 30.4 percent (17-56) from the field, including 10-33 from beyond the arc. NKU also missed nine free throws and only got one point off the bench. GB's bench scored 19 points, with
Ellie Foster scoring seven and Schiltz and
Julia Hartwig each finishing with six. Schiltz also snagged a team-high seven rebounds.
The balanced attack was also contributed by seniors
Meghan Pingel and
Lyndsey Robson, who finished with nine and seven points respectively.
NKU was led by Lindsey Duvall with 18 points and 11 rebounds, with Ivy Turner added 12 points.
GB held NKU to 3-for-13 in the fourth quarter, scoring seven of its 14 points at the free throw line.
The two teams will battle again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. CT back at the BB&T Arena.
