HIGHLAND HEIGHTS,Ky. --- The Green Bay softball team opened its Horizon League season on the road Friday afternoon, taking the diamond at Northern Kentucky for a doubleheader. The Phoenix split a pair of pitching duels, with a combined two runs being scored between the 17 total inning played on the afternoon.
NKU 1, GB 0
Northern Kentucky claimed game one, 1-0, despite Green Bay threatening in the final inning and loading the bases.
Kayla Schwebke was spent all 6.0 innings in the circle for GB to begin the day, allowing only two hits in the entire contest and fanning two batters.
Alyssa Brewer and Crystal Guzman notched hits for the Green Bay offense, with Brewer's coming as a seventh-inning double to nearly bring in the game-tying run.
GB 1, NKU 0 (10 Inn.)
Brittany Baneck threw 10.0 scoreless innings for Green Bay in game two of the conference opening series, allowing just six hits and picking up seven strikeouts.
It is the second complete-game victory from Baneck this season as well as the second shutout. In her last two games, the sophomore has thrown 17.0 scoreless innings.
Green Bay's four hits in the matchup came from Bailey Schultz, Samantha Saloun and Jadin Justman, with Schultz providing the only multi-hit performance and game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning.
Green Bay rounds out the series with Northern Kentucky tomorrow in another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
