GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) --- Although Green Bay struck first in the annual Chancellor's Cup match with in-state rival Milwaukee, the Panthers managed to score twice, including the game-winner in the final minute of regulation, to steal the cup and a crucial three points from the Phoenix.
Green Bay falls 3-3-1 following the heartbreaker, while Milwaukee improves to 5-4 and moves into fourth place in the league standings.
Efficency was key as it has been all season long for the Green Bay offense. The Phoenix placed only two shots on the opposing net, with the attempt from the foot of
Ezau Millan in the 22nd minute finding mesh after a perfectly placed cross from
Fredi Ortega.
GB carried a 1-0 advantage into the second half, where MKE seemed to increase its offensive pressure.
Milwaukee attempted 13 shots in the second half compared to only six in the opening 45 minutes. The Panthers knotted things up in the 52nd minute and nearly took the lead 87th minute when MKE had a solid look at a semi-open net following a deflection, but defender
Tim Stiller managed to redirect the shot and keep things knotted at one-all.
Just as it seemed things were headed to overtime at Aldo Santaga Stadium, Milwaukee's David Cox corralled a deflection and fired a shot into the Phoenix net with only 36 seconds remaining. Green Bay quickly moved to attack with seconds left but was unable to tie things up, falling to the Panthers, 2-1, and relinquishing the Chancellor's Cup.
Green Bay closes out the regular season with Senior Day on Monday, April 5 when the Phoenix welcomes Oakland for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
