Green Bay Splits on Final Day, Claims Series at Cleveland State

GAME 1 | Cleveland State 4, Green Bay 3

CLEVELAND, Ohio --Bailey Schultz collected three hits, but the Green Bay Phoenix fell to the Cleveland State Vikings 4-3 in the first game on Saturday.

Freshman Gabby Paliska (1-7) got the ball to start for Green Bay (19-16, 14-13) and took the loss. Sophomore Brittany Baneck was a bright spot for the Phoenix, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Schultz's three-hit day led the Phoenix offensively. Freshman Jadin Justman put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Freshman Randi McKay also chipped in for Green Bay, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Phoenix got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the top of the first inning. Green Bay scored twice on a two-run double off the bat of Justman.

The Phoenix lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the fourth trailing 3-2. Green Bay scored once on an RBI single off the bat of McKay, which evened the score at 3-3. Cleveland State then scored one time over the remaining three innings to break the tie and grab the 4-3 win.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 5, Cleveland State 4

CLEVELAND, Ohio --The Green Bay Phoenix broke through after a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning to take down the Cleveland State Vikings 5-4 to round out the series.

Junior Kayla Schwebke (9-6) got the win for Green Bay (20-16, 15-13). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on eight hits, allowing five walks and striking out six.

Offensively, the Phoenix were paced by junior Morgan Bihun, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a home run, a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Tiffany Giese furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4. Freshman Jadin Justman also chipped in for Green Bay, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Phoenix were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Bihun put Green Bay on the board with a one-out solo home run off freshman Jenna Watts.

The score stayed at 1-1 until the very next inning, when the Phoenix put runs on the scoreboard once again. Bailey Schultz came across to score the lone run of the inning for Green Bay, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Phoenix.

Cleveland State fought back to tie the ballgame at two before Green Bay reclaimed a 4-2 advantage in the sixth inning. Freshman Daija Williams' run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Phoenix.

Green Bay held the Vikings without a run before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Phoenix drove home a run on Justman's two-out RBI double, bringing the score to 5-2 in favor of Green Bay. Cleveland State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Phoenix still held on for the 5-4 win.
