Green Bay is 21-55 against the Panthers. MKE has won as many as 18 in a row, while GB won nine consecutive between 1991 and 1994. The Panthers have had the latest win streak, making it six in a row after defeating Green Bay 3-1 last October. GB's last home victory over Milwaukee was on Nov. 11, 2018, when the Phoenix won 3-2.
ABOUT THE PANTHERS
Susie Johnson has a long history of success at the helm of the Panther program, boasting a 260-180 record. Johnson is in her 16th season as head coach but spent a decade as an assistant and associate head coach. In her 25 years with Milwaukee, the Panthers have won just under 75 percent of their games.
Ari Miller is Milwaukee's do-it-all player, leading the team in kills (219, 3.17/set), points (269.0, 3.90/set), and blocks (73.0, 1.06/set). Kaley Blake has recorded 367 assists (5.32/set), while Josie Johnson has 300 even, an average of 4.35 per set. Bri Geurts, a De Pere, Wis. native, is fourth on the team in kills with 149.0.
KILLIN' IT!
Alexandra Zakutney has been a dominant force for the Phoenix. She paces the team in kills (256, 3.24 per set) and points (303.0, 3.84 per set). Zakutney is good for third in the Horizon League in kills, only behind Youngstown State's Paula Gursching (341, 4.87/set) and Oakland's Patti Cesarini (263, 3.65/set). The Ontario, Canada native had a team-leading 400 kills last year, best for sixth in the HL.
THE GREAT GROMOS
Angie Gromos has been a player to watch all season. The grad transfer from Northern Illinois is fifth on the squad in kills (125, 1.64/set) and paces the team with 91.0 blocks (which is first in the HL), an average of 1.20 per set. Gromos is the tallest player on the team, standing at 6'5", and was named Horizon League Player of the Week on Sept. 7. Gromos will likely see an increased role after Tiffany Paalman's injury last weekend.
MS. ASSIST
Calli Gentry is having another remarkable season for the Phoenix. She is fifth in the nation in assists, racking up 780 in 79 sets (9.86/set). In 2021, Gentry totaled 1,227 in 121 sets, averaging 10.14 per set. Gentry, a redshirt sophomore, was selected to the 2021 Horizon League All-Academic Team and took part in the USA Volleyball National Team Open Program this past offseason.
ON THE HORIZON
Green Bay has 10 games remaining on the 2022 regular season schedule. It's an even split, with five each at home and on the road. Currently, the Phoenix is second in the conference standings, just behind Wright State. GB hosts Wright State on October 28, which is the Breast Cancer Awareness Game.
