Green Bay boasts winning records against all three teams, starting with a 7-6 record against PFW. GB has dominated against Youngstown State with a 37-7 record against the Penguins, including the 3-1 victory on Sept. 24. The Phoenix made it 4-1 all-time against Robert Morris with a 3-0 sweep earlier this year on Sept. 23.
ABOUT THE MASTODONS
Steve Florio is in his ninth season with PFW. He holds a 100-147 record, tallying his 100th victory on October 14 with a thrilling five-set win over Cleveland State. Watch out for Sidney Schiller, the team leader in kills (248, 3.40/set) and points (282.0, 3.86/set). Schiller is fifth in the conference in kills, while Molly Mirabelli paces the team in blocks (53.0, 0.79/set).
ABOUT THE PENGUINS
Youngstown State is 8-12 heading into their Tuesday night tilt against Oakland. The Penguins will face GB on Friday night as they try to fight their way to the sixth and final spot in the HL Championships. Paula Gursching, a sophomore outside hitter, is a national phenom. The Schwalbach Taunus, Germany, native, is third in the nation in kills (386, 4.95/set) and second in points (437, 5.60/set).
ABOUT THE COLONIALS
Danny Doherty is in his second season with Robert Morris, posting a record of 17-34 so far. The Colonials are last in the HL with a 1-8 conference record, but Abby Ryan and Annie Monaco, both juniors, give the Colonials a spark on the offensive end. The pair leads RMU with 205 and 172 kills, respectively. Another junior, Emma Brown, has racked up 50 blocks on the season.
AMAZING ANGIE
Angie Gromos has been a player to watch all season. The grad transfer from Northern Illinois is fifth on the squad in kills (130, 1.65/set) and paces the team with 93.0 blocks, an average of 1.18 per set, first in the Horizon League. Gromos was named Horizon League Player of the Week on Sept. 7. Gromos will be important down the stretch after Tiffany Paalman's injury on October 7.
CALLI CRUSHIN' IT
Calli Gentry is having another remarkable season for the Phoenix. Currently, she is ninth in the nation in assists, racking up 821 of them in 82 sets (10.00/set). In 2021, Gentry totaled 1,227 in 121 sets, an average of 10.14 per set. Gentry, a redshirt sophomore, was selected to the 2021 Horizon League All-Academic Team and took part in the USA Volleyball National Team Open Program this past offseason.
ON THE HORIZON
Green Bay is nearing the final stretch of the 2022 regular season. The Phoenix has four home contests and five road games remaining including a big one versus Wright State on Friday, October 28. The Raiders are in first place, with the Phoenix just two games back in second. Wright State has won 12 consecutive games and is the only undefeated Horizon League team left.
