GREEN BAY, Wis. -The Green Bay volleyball team battled adversity and claimed a 3-2 victory over the Cleveland State Vikings Saturday at home. The victory improved the Phoenix record to 15-7 overall and 6-2 in Horizon League play.
The Phoenix was led by a huge double-double from Alexandra Zakutney, who finished with 19 kills and 18 digs. Shannon Coughlin added 17 kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Annelise Sparks chipped in with 16 digs to compliment six blocks from Ellie Kurpeikis.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1Â | The Phoenix fell 28-26 in a first set that was extremely tight. Neither team opened up a lead of more than two points until Cleveland State went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. Coughlin contributed five kills off the bench for Green Bay, who went on their own 4-0 run to lead 25-24 before eventually dropping the set.
SET 2Â | Green Bay took the early lead at 4-3 and never relinquished it on the way to a 25-18 victory in set two. GB's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Cleveland State attacks in the stanza. On offense, the Phoenix scored two service aces; Cora Behnke added four kills to help the attack.
SET 3Â | After dropping the first two points, Green Bay took a 7-2 lead and led by up to 13 points en route to a 25-13 victory. Five different Phoenix players registered kills, led by Zakutney with five. Cleveland State players committed twelve errors, including a service error that ended the set.
SET 4Â | The Phoenix dropped the fourth set to the Vikings, 25-20. Cleveland State went on an early 6-0 run to claim an 8-2 advantage and never trailed again. Behnke tallied four kills, and Angie Gromos added two more for the Phoenix. After facing a 23-14 deficit, GB rallied to come within four points before the end of the set.
SET 5 | Green Bay prevailed 15-9 in the third set to secure the victory. The Phoenix won the first three points and never trailed after. Zakutney notched six kills, including the final three Phoenix points of the match. Calli Gentry contributed two service aces to aid GB, who had their largest lead of the set, six points, at its conclusion.
