MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica - The Green Bay men's basketball team battled but fell to Queens (3-1, 0-0 ASUN) 81-65 in the first game of the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic.
Cade Meyer led the Phoenix (0-4, 0-0 HL) with 10 points. Meyer was very efficient, shooting 5-of-6 in 27 minutes while pulling down three rebounds. Nate Jenkins, Clarence Cummings III, Davin Zeigler, and Garren Davis each tallied eight points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GB quickly took a 4-0 lead before extending to 9-3 after Meyer found Cummings on a backdoor cut. Green Bay would continue the strong start with a great sequence from Jack Rose, who recorded a steal before finishing with a layup on the fastbreak to make it 19-11 with 10:21 remaining in the opening frame. The Royals responded and Kenny Dye eventually tied the game at 19 with a free throw to cap an 8-0 run for Queens. GB answered immediately with back-to-back triples from Garren Davis, and the Phoenix would lead until Kalib Matthews splashed a three to give the Royals a 32-30 lead with 2:40 left in the half. GB would end the half by outscoring Queens 5-2 and took a 35-34 advantage into the break.
The script would flip in the second half as the Royals outscored Green Bay 47-30. An 18-2 Queens' run that spanned 7:46 was difference in the game.
GAME NOTES
» GB's bench scored 27 points.
» Jenkins, Cummings, and Davis combined for 13 of the team's 28 rebounds and seven of the team's 12 assists.
» Jenkins had a team-high five rebounds and played a season-high 30 minutes.
