DAYTON, Ohio - The 2022 season has come to an end for the Green Bay volleyball team, who lost to the Northern Kentucky Norse 3-0 (24-26, 17-25, 19-25) Saturday in the Horizon League Semifinals. The Phoenix finished the season 23-11, which tied for the second-most wins in a single season in program history. It's the fifth season in program history with 20+ wins, and the third in head coach Abbey Sutherland's five seasons.
Alexandra Zakutney finished with 15 kills on the day to lead the Phoenix offense while finishing with a hitting percentage of .324. GB got 14 digs from Annelise Sparks to lead them defensively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | NKU got out to a three point lead early and led for much of the first set. The Phoenix fought back, forcing seven ties before NKU took a 1-0 lead with a 26-24 set win.
SET 2 | Northern Kentucky took a 2-0 lead after a commanding 25-17 win in the second set. The frame was tied at 4-4 when the Norse went on a 5-0 run to grab a 9-4 lead. That lead never got smaller than four points the rest of the set as Northern Kentucky cruised to victory.
SET 3 | Northern Kentucky finished the sweep with a 25-19 third-set win. Neither team had a lead larger than two until NKU went on a 4-0 run at 16 all to grab a 20-16 lead. That run proved to be the killer blow, with the Norse taking it by a final of 25-19.
GAME NOTES
» Abby Gardner had a team-high one ace in the loss.
» Zakutney registered double-digit kills for the fourth-consecutive match.
» GB finished the match with a .116 hitting percentage compared to .282 for Northern Kentucky.
» Green Bay attackers were helped by a match-high 28 assists from Calli Gentry.
» Saturday's match was the 10th Horizon League Semifinal in program history.
» Northern Kentucky will go on to face top-seeded Wright State in the Horizon League Championship tomorrow.
