CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Green Bay men's basketball team battled in their final nonconference game Sunday afternoon on the road at Oregon State, but fell 65-56.
The Phoenix (2-11) had three players score in double figures, led by Clarence Cummings III, who finished with season-highs in points (16) and rebounds (7). Brock Heffner added 13 points and Zae Blake stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists.
The Beavers dominated in the paint, outscoring the Phoenix 30-16. The Oregon State bench was also strong, besting GB's 23-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams battled back-and-forth early, with the hosts building a early 16-12 lead. Green Bay responded with a 6-0 run capped by a three from Randy Tucker, to take an 18-16 lead with 9:06 left in the half. Oregon State responded however, and outscored GB 14-5 the rest of the half to take a 30-23 lead into the break.
GB came out of the gates strong in the second half, cutting the Beaver lead to 35-32 after a Zae Blake three capped off a 9-5 run. That was as close as the game would get, as Oregon State once again responded, this time with a 13-1 run that made the score 48-33. OSU held off a late offensive surge from the Phoenix to grab their sixth win of the season.
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay shot solid overall, finishing 19-for-46 (41.3-percent) from the floor and 8-for-21 (38.1-percent)from three.
» Green Bay played solid perimeter defense, holding Oregon State to 20.0-percent from beyond the arc on 15 attempts.
» Cummings III played a season-high 37 minutes in the loss.
» Heffner has scored in double figures in five of his last six.
» The Beavers were led by 20 points from Glenn Taylor Jr., who finished 6-of-7 from the field and 7-of-9 from the charity stripe.
COMING UP
Green Bay will continue their longest road trip of the year after the Holidays and travel to Detroit Mercy on Thursday, December 29. GB will play three more on the road after taking on the Titans before returning home on Thursday, January 12 to take on Wright State.
