The Phoenix and Cougars will meet on Wednesday night for the fourth time since 2006. GB is 5-0 on the road against the Cougars and is 7-0 when CSU visits Titletown. Chicago State last visited the Kress Center in 2008, when Green Bay won 66-48. The Cougars and Phoenix last clashed on November 23, 2019, when GB took care of business in a 102-46 thrashing of CSU.
ABOUT THE COUGARS
Head coach Andrea Williams is in her first season with Chicago State after being hired in July. Williams came to CSU after spending three seasons at Division II school Fort Valley State. Williams is 50-177 in 12 seasons as a head coach.
A trio of Cougars presents a challenge for the Phoenix. Tae'lor Willard paces Chicago State with 12.1 points per game, but Taylor Norris leads the team in shooting percentage (46-of-96, 47.9-percent). Norris has played in all 15 Chicago State games and made 14 starts. Josie Hill completes the trio, leading CSU in rebounds (6.9 RPG) and blocks (1.4 BPG).
LAST MATCHUP
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz led the Phoenix with 12 points, while Sydney Levy chipped in with 10 in the 63-49 win over Illinois State on Sunday afternoon. Cassie Schiltz added nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Callie Genke provided some life late in the third quarter, banking in a long three at the buzzer, giving GB a 51-38 lead entering the fourth quarter. GB outscored the Redbirds 12-11 in the stanza, with Schiltz, Julia Hartwig, and Natalie McNeal scoring four points en route to the 63-49 victory.
WIN, WIN, WIN
Head coach Kevin Borseth has an impressive 774-306 record in 36 seasons. He is 462-137 in his first 19 seasons with the Phoenix and garnered his 770th career win against Northeastern on November 25. Borseth has had stops at Michigan Tech, Michigan, and Green Bay. The Phoenix has punched a ticket to 13 NCAA Tournament appearances under Borseth.
'PRESENTS' IN THE PAINT
Maddy Schreiber dominating to start the 2022-23 season. The forward is averaging 9.8 points and 26.4 minutes per game. She is shooting 39-of-76 from the floor (51.3 percent) and is an impressive 30-of-48 inside the arc (62.5 percent). Maddy set career-highs in points (19), minutes (35), and three-point field goals attempted (7) in the win against Wisconsin. She leads the team in offensive rebounds (15), and her 76 shot attempts are second on the team, only behind Sydney Levy's 84.
TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JAS
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz has provided Green Bay with a spark off the bench this season, averaging 6.9 points in just 13.9 minutes per game. Kondrakiewicz tied her career high in points (18) against North Dakota State on December 10. Kondrakiewicz is 23-of-50 from the field (46.0 percent) and 8-of-14 from downtown (57.1 percent). She has been just as good from the charity stripe, knocking down 15 of 18 free throws (83.3 percent).
DYNAMITE DEFENSE
Green Bay is playing strong defense so far this season. The Phoenix ranks 95th in the nation in scoring defense and fourth in the Horizon, allowing just 59.7 points per game. Only Robert Morris (40th), Youngstown State (41st), and Cleveland State (51st) are in front of GB. Last season, GB ranked 23rd in scoring defense.
WIN FROM WITHIN
Kevin Borseth has garnered a plethora of talent from the state of Wisconsin. This season, 13 of the 15 players come from inside the state border. Only Jenna Guyer (Circle Pines, Minn.) and Tatum Koenig (West Branch, Iowa) are not from Wisconsin. Two of this past offseason's transfers returned to their cheesehead heritage (Natalie McNeal, a Germantown native, and Brehna Evans, from West De Pere).
LET LEVY LAUNCH IT
Senior Sydney Levy has been remarkable this season. Levy is 39-of-84 (46.4- percent) overall while drilling 22 of 48 triples (45.8 percent). Levy has played 24 or more minutes in the last five games and 30 or more minutes in the last three games. She has also scored in double figures in five of the last six contests, shooting no less than 42 percent in all but three games. Levy's dominance has helped put her in head coach Kevin Borseth's starting lineup.
FREE IS FOR ME
GB ranks 1st in the nation with an 82.8-percent free throw percentage. Four Phoenix who have attempted at least 10 free throws are shooting 83 percent or better:
