Green Bay is 13-4 against Oakland and and a dominant 54-8 versus Detroit Mercy. The Phoenix is 5-2 at home against the Golden Grizzlies, but Oakland hasn't visited Titletown since February 2019. GB and Oakland last clashed on February 10, 2022, when the Phoenix pulled out a gutsy 61-57 win on the road.
The historic rivalry between Green Bay and Detroit Mercy dates back to January 1995. Green Bay dropped four of the first six contests against the Titans but has been nearly perfect since then, winning 52 of 56 games since 1998. The Phoenix has been impeccable against the Titans, boasting a 30-2 home record against DMU and taking 28 of the last 29 home contests against Detroit Mercy. The programs last met on February 12, 2022, when Green Bay won a sluggish battle 53-39 in the Motor City.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES
Jeff Tungate is in his 9th season with Oakland and has posted a 108-138 record entering Thursday's contest. Tungate, a 1993 graduate of Oakland, has guided the Golden Grizzlies to a 6-5 start. Alexis Johnson has been one of Tungate's top players, leading Oakland in points per game (11.0) and rebounds per game (5.2).
ABOUT THE TITANS
Kate Atcher was named the 14th head coach of Detroit Mercy women's basketball in late April. Atcher spent the previous six seasons with Loyola-Chicago and made stops at St. Bonaventure and Xavier before that. The Bowling Green graduate is off to a challenging start with the Titans, entering their Thursday matchup at Milwaukee with a 2-9 record.
Irene Murua is a force to be reckoned with, nearly averaging a double-double per game. She paces the Titans with 11.5 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game.
LAST MATCHUP
Green Bay won their fifth contest in a row by throttling Chicago State 92-42 at the Kress Center on December 21. The Phoenix had five players score in double figures. Maddy Schreiber – who was 8-of-8 from the field – and Natalie McNeal each had 16 points, while Jenna Guyer chipped in with 14. Callie Genke had 12 points, and Tatum Koenig tallied 11. GB held the Cougars to only 28.4 percent shooting from the field and never trailed after taking an 8-6 lead in the first quarter. GB scored 90 or more points (92) for the first time since tallying 92 at Oakland on Jan. 2, 2021.
SALIENT STATS
Green Bay was dominant against Chicago State. Statistical highlights from the victory on December 21 include:
- Tallying 20 or more assists (25) for the first time since recording 21 at Purdue Fort Wayne on Feb. 24, 2022.
- Scoring 90 or more points (92) for the first time since tallying 92 at Oakland on Jan. 2, 2021.
- GB's bench totaled 59 points.
SHINING SCHREIBER
Sophomore Maddy Schreiber has taken a leap in her second year with Green Bay. Schreiber has been nearly unstoppable, shooting 56 percent from the floor (47-of-83) and 68 percent inside the arc (38-of-56). The Appleton native is also second on the team in blocks (5) and third on the squad in minutes (25.7 MPG). She scored a career-high 19 points in the win over Wisconsin on December 14 and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor in the win over Chicago State. Schreiber is averaging a career-high 9.8 points per game.
SPECIAL SEASON FOR SYDNEY
Sydney Levy is off to a hot start this season, posting career numbers through Green Bay's first 11 games. Levy is shooting a remarkable 42-of-93 (45.2 percent) from the field and has drilled 23 of 52 attempts (44.2 percent) from downtown. She is on pace to shatter numbers this season, averaging 177.5 field goal attempts and 108.5 three-point field goal attempts in her first two seasons with the Phoenix.
JAS IT UP
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz has provided Green Bay with a spark off the bench this season, averaging 6.6 points in just 13.7 minutes per game. Kondrakiewicz tied her career high in points (18) against North Dakota State on December 10. Kondrakiewicz is 24-of-52 from the field (46.2 percent) and 8-of-15 from downtown (53.3 percent). She has been just as good from the charity stripe, knocking down 17 of 22 free throws (77.3 percent).
DYNAMITE DEFENSE
Green Bay is playing strong defense this season, allowing just 58.2 points per contest. The Phoenix ranks 71st in the nation in scoring defense and fourth in the Horizon, only behind Youngstown State (23rd), Cleveland State (33rd), and Robert Morris (42nd). Last season, GB ranked 23rd in scoring defense.
CHARITY STRIPE CHANCES
GB ranks 1st in the country with an 81.0—percent free throw percentage. Last season, the Phoenix ranked ninth in the nation with a 78.6-percent free throw percentage. Hailey Oskey, Cassie Schiltz, Tatum Koenig, and Bailey Butler have all attempted at least 10 free throws and are shooting 80 percent or better.
SEE YOU NEXT YEAR
The Phoenix will begin the New Year with four consecutive road games, battling Wright State, Northern Kentucky, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Cleveland State. Green Bay's next home game is Friday, January 20.
BENCH BRIGADE
Green Bay's bench has provided a big boost this season. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz, Jenna Guyer, and Callie Genke are all averaging five or more points per game while shooting 45 percent or better. The trio combined for 30 of Green Bay's 59 bench points in the blowout victory over Chicago State on December 21.
WIN FROM WITHIN
This season, 13 of the 15 players come from inside the state border. Only Jenna Guyer (Circle Pines, Minn.) and Tatum Koenig (West Branch, Iowa) are not from Wisconsin. Two of this past offseason's transfers returned to their cheesehead heritage (Natalie McNeal, a Germantown native, and Brehna Evans, from De Pere).
NEW PHOENIX FACES
Green Bay welcomes three new members for the 2022-23 season.
