GREEN BAY, Wis. – An early 8-0 deficit didn't deter the Green Bay women's basketball team Thursday night as they cruised to a 64-42 blowout of Oakland at the Kress Center.
The Phoenix (9-3, 2-1 HL) was paced by Maddy Schreiber's 14 points. Sydney Levy tacked on a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Natalie McNeal added eight points. Levy's double-double was the first of her career, the first for the Phoenix this season, and the first double-double since Jasmine Kondrakiewicz on February 12, 2021, against UIC.
Oakland (6-6, 1-2 HL) was led by Breanne Beatty's 21 points. Beatty was the only Golden Grizzly in double figures.
JUST FOR THE RECORD (BOOK)
Head coach Kevin Borseth garnered his 550th Division I victory Thursday night. The legendary coach is just 36 wins from 500 victories in his time at Green Bay and 33 wins from 800 all-time.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay fell behind 8-0 in the first five and a half minutes before scoring their first bucket, thanks to Tatum Koenig. The Phoenix would keep the deficit at seven, trailing 11-4, before finishing the opening frame on an 8-2 run. Koenig and Jenna Guyer helped spark the run, combining for seven of GB's 12 first-quarter points.
The Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies would keep the score within four points for the first 4:57 of the second quarter, but Green Bay tore off an 8-0 run to make it 30-20 with 2:17 remaining in the half. Oakland would show some fight, pulling back to within three at 30-27 with 42 seconds left in the stanza. Koenig would tack on another bucket to help put GB up by three at the break. Schreiber scored nine of her 14 points in the first half, including six in the second quarter.
Oakland and GB went back and forth for the first few minutes coming out of intermission, but Green Bay started to pull away shortly after. Miriam Ibezium missed a pair of free throws, giving a spark for the Phoenix, who went on a 14-2 run to end the quarter, which spanned the last seven minutes of the frame. In that time, Oakland went cold, shooting 1-for-15 from the field, with the only bucket made by Brooke Daniels. The Phoenix took a 15-point lead into the fourth quarter.
Green Bay expanded the lead, leading by as much as 24 in the fourth. The Golden Grizzlies scored just five points in the final 8:11 of the game, and both teams went scoreless for over three and a half minutes. Koenig made a jumper with 37 seconds remaining before Aaliyah McQueen answered with 29 seconds to go. GB ran out the clock, winning their sixth straight game, 64-42.
