MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Cade Meyer scored a career-high 18 points and Nate Jenkins had 15 more, but the Green Bay men's basketball team fell to the Milwaukee Panthers 54-44 on the road Sunday. The Phoenix led 22-17 at the half, but a 19-0 second half run from the Panthers decided the game.
It was a grind-it-out type game for both teams, with GB shooting 26.0-percent from the field and 22.7-percent from three compared to 34.1 and 29.4-percent from MKE. Donovan Newby led the way for Milwaukee, scoring 17 points off the bench, going 3-for-4 from three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After falling behind 3-0, Green Bay went on a 5-0 run with 17:51 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Meyer, to take a 5-3 lead. From there both teams traded buckets but the Phoenix added three points to their lead by the end of the period, entering halftime with a 22-17 advantage. Green Bay relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 22 points. Meyer had 11 points and six rebounds in the half.
GB started the second half by extending their lead to 10 following a pair of free throws from Meyer with 15:56 to go. The Phoenix was leading 35-27 with 12:20 to go in the contest when the Panthers turned the game on its head, going on a 19-0 run that spanned to 3:13 left in the game. By that point, the Phoenix trailed 47-38, and never got back to within striking distance.
GAME NOTES
» Meyer and Jenkins combined to account for 75-percent of the Phoenix points.
» Jenkins has scored in double figures in three straight, and four out of the last five.
» Since Jan. 15, Meyer has averaged 13.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
» The Green Bay defense forced 16 turnovers.
» Green Bay got a team-high seven rebounds from Meyer.
WHAT'S NEXT
Green Bay returns home this weekend for their final regular season home games. On Friday, the Phoenix will host Purdue Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. at the Kress, followed by Cleveland State on Sunday.
