ABOUT CLEVELAND STATE
Cleveland State has been near the top of the Horizon League standing all season long. The Vikings currently sit second, but are coming off of just their second conference loss, dropping a 78-72 contest to Northern Kentucky. CSU's only other conference was an 86-80 overtime loss to Oakland. Cleveland State scores the third-most points per game (74.3), and has the second-best margin (5.0) in the HL. As a team, they shoot the highest percentage in the league (47.0-percent), as well as holding opponents to 42.1-percent shooting.
The Vikings have three players averaging in double figures, led by senior guard D'Moi Hodge, who averages 15.7 points per game on 47.4-percent shooting from the field and 33.3-percent from three. Wing Torrey Patton is the team's second leading scorer, chipping in 13.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Tre Gomillion also averages 10.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.
ABOUT PURDUE FORT WAYNE
Purdue Fort Wayne is currently tied for the sixth spot in the Horizon League with a 6-6 conference record. Last weekend, the Mastodons dropped a pair of road games at Northern Kentucky (59-49) and Wright State (75-63). PFW is one of the best shooting teams in the HL, sitting fourth in FG% (45.1), second in 3FG% (35.6), and second in FT% (78.4).
The Mastodons are led by their backcourt, Jarred Godfrey and Jalon Pipkins. Godfrey leads the squad with 15.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game. Godfrey is one of PFW's best shooters, knocking down 38.2-percent of his threes. Pipkins averages 12.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.2 assists.
SERIES HISTORY
Green Bay holds a 51-32 record all-time against Cleveland State. The Vikings swept the Phoenix last year, with both games being in Cleveland due to the COVID season. Green Bay has faced Purdue Fort Wayne three times all-time, including one postseason game. GB swept the Mastodons last year in the regular season, but dropped a thrilling double-overtime first-round HL tournament game, 89-84.
LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix is currently half way through a four-game road trip. They opened the trip last weekend with a 50-63 loss against Youngstown State. The Penguins led for the majority of the game, but GB narrowed the game to a five-point deficit after a
Kamari McGee driving layup to make it 47-52 with 4:43 left. YSU held off GB with an 11-3 run to end the game. Last Saturday, green bay lost a close game to Robert Morris, 60-62.
Cade Meyer posted a career-high 16 points and eight rebounds against the Colonials.
SHARING IS CARING
Lucas Stieber has been prolific in the assist's category, ranking in the top 100 in the nation nearly all season in assist to turnover ratio. He currently sits 70th with a 2.16. The Green Bay native is currently fourth in the HL, with Deshon Parker (Cleveland State), Bryson Langdon (Northern Kentucky), and Kevin Johnson (UIC) sitting in front.
MINUTES FOR MEYER
True freshman
Cade Meyer has seen a large uptick in playing time recently. He has eclipsed 30 minutes in seven games this season, and six have come in the last six games. In that stretch, he's averaged 13.0 points on 56.1-percent shooting. Meyer has also made strides in rebounding recently, averaging 7.2 a game compared to his season average of 4.3.
KAMARI KRUSHIN' IT
A two-time Horizon League Freshman of the Week,
Kamari McGee is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.6 points per game. McGee had his best stretch of the season to this point from Dec. 12 to Jan. 15. During that span, he averaged 14.4 points per game. Overall, he shot 44-percent (48-of-109) And was 25-of-30 (83.3-percent) From the charity stripe. McGee chipped in with a solid 15-point performance last Saturday against Robert Morris.
KELLOGG: HE'S GRRREAT!
Appearing and starting in all of GB's 20 games,
Japannah Kellogg III has been one of the most consistent players for coach Ryan this season. The big man from Ames, Iowa does all of his damage inside the three-point line, taking all but two shots from two. On the season, Kellogg is averaging 7.6 points and 4.9 rebounds per game while shooting 48.4-percent from the floor.
ON THE HORIZON
After this weekend's road trip, the Phoenix will return home to begin a stretch of five games in 11 days. That stretch starts Feb. 9 at home versus Wright State, which is also the last regular-season home game at the Resch Center. The stretch concludes with Northern Kentucky, Milwaukee, Purdue Fort Wayne, and Cleveland State.
