Green Bay Looks to Bounce Back Against Wright State and Northern Kentucky

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay men's basketball team returns home to begin a stretch of five games in 11 days, including four home games. The Phoenix will take on Wright State Wednesday before facing Northern Kentucky Friday night.

ABOUT THE RAIDERS
With an 11-4 conference record, Wright State currently sits third in the Horizon League Standings. The Raiders are coming to Green Bay off of perhaps their biggest win of the season, taking down Oakland 75-64 at home. Trey Calvin led the way for WSU, going for 23 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the floor and 4-of-7 from three.
 
Wright State has a potent offense, led by three of the top 12 scorers in the Horizon League. Junior guard Tanner Holden, the league's second-leading scorer, averages 20.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game while shooting .518/.407/.810. Forward Grant Basile isn't far behind, averaging 17.5 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. Trey Calvin is the 12th leading scorer in the HL, pouring in 14.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game on shooting splits of .461/.374/.860. As a team, the Raiders are second in the HL in scoring (75.9) and field-goal percentage (47.1-percent).
 
ABOUT THE NORSE
Northern Kentucky has been one of the hottest teams in the Horizon League recently. Before their most recent loss to Detroit Mercy, the Norse had won six straight, including wins over the top three teams in the HL – Wright State, Cleveland State, and Oakland. NKU is 8-5 in conference play, fourth in the league.
 
Northern Kentucky has one of the Horizon League's best defenses, allowing just 67.5 points per game, the second-lowest among HL teams. On the offensive side of the ball, the Norse are led by a trio of guards. Marques Warrick leads the team with 14.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. Trevon Faulkner is one of the team's best shooters, shooting 40.0-percent from three this season, and averaging 13.1 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. Sam Vinson is one of the team's best passers, averaging 3.7 assists per game as well as 11.9 points and 4.0 rebounds.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Green Bay is 33-35 all-time against Wright State. Their last meeting, which was on New Year's Day, came down to the wire. While guarding the Raiders Trey Calvin, Kamari McGee slipped, resulting in his shoe falling off, and Calvin drained a three to give WSU a 72-69 advantage with 20 seconds left.
 
NKU transitioned to NCAA Division 1 in 2012 and entered the Horizon League in 2015. They have a 9-5 record over Green Bay, with seven of the 14 matchups having final scores separated by seven points or less.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Phoenix wrapped up a four-game road trip last weekend against Cleveland State and Purdue Fort Wayne. Despite dropping both, Green Bay saw stellar performances from Nate Jenkins and Cade Meyer. Jenkins poured in a career-high 19 points in 36 minutes at Cleveland State, while Meyer averaged 15.0 points between the two contests. Meyer also notched a new career-high against Cleveland State, finishing with 17 points to go with six rebounds and three assists.
 
SHARING IS CARING
Lucas Stieber continues to shine in the assist department, totaling 75 on the season (3.75 apg). He is fifth in the HL with a 2.14 assist to turnover ratio, which is good for 79th in the nation. Stieber was in the top 30 at one point this season. He's still one of five HL players in the top 100. His nine assists against FIU on Nov. 19 marked a career-high.
 
MEYER MATURING
Cade Meyer has turned into a force on the floor for Green Bay in the second half of the season. He was named Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Feb. 7, but has been hot since Jan. 15. In the seven games since then, he has averaged:
  • 14.43 points per game
  • 7.0 rebounds per game
  • 57.0-percent shooting from the field
His first 15 games:
  • 5.5 points per game
  • 3.0 rebounds per game
 
KAMARI KRUSHIN' IT
A two-time Horizon League Freshman of the Week, Kamari McGee is second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.3 points per game. McGee had his best stretch of the season to this point from Dec. 12 to Jan. 15. During that span, he averaged 14.4 points per game. Overall, he shot 44-percent (48-of-109) And was 25-of-30 (83.3-percent) From the charity stripe. McGee was solid in Green Bay's most recent road trip, averaging 10 points per contest. His most notable game came at Robert Morris where he chipped in with 15 points.
 
ANSONG IS THE ANSWER
Manny Ansong has been a consistent force for GB all season. He leads the team in field goal percentage (53.3-percent on 96-of-180 shooting), and paces GB with 11.9 points per contest. One of his best performances came on Dec. 2 against Robert Morris, where he posted 23 points on 11-of-15 shooting, guiding the Phoenix to a 70-58 victory over the Colonials. He's scored in double figures in 13 of GB's 22 games.
 
ON THE HORIZON
Starting with Wednesday's game against Wright State, Green Bay starts a three-game in five-day stretch that includes Northern Kentucky on Friday and Milwaukee on Sunday. Following, the Phoenix will return home for matchups against Purdue Fort Wayne and Cleveland state on Friday, Feb. 18 and Sunday, Feb. 20.
