Green Bay Drops #HLMBB First Round Matchup at Detroit Mercy

DETROIT, Mich. - Tuesday night, the Green Bay men's basketball team traveled to No. 6 Detroit Mercy for the First Round of the KEEPS Horizon League Basketball Championships, but fell 79-62.

The Phoenix (5-25) had two players score in double figures, led by Kamari McGee, who almost had a double-double with 20 points and nine rebounds. Emmanuel Ansong added 11 points and Cem Kirciman added eight points in 16 minutes off the bench.

Antoine Davis, the Horizon League's leading scorer, had a huge night for the Titans, scoring 38 points on 15-of-24 shooting from the floor and 6-of-10 shooting from three-point range.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Green Bay struggled out of the gate, falling behind 10-0 in the first five minutes. GB responded with a 14-6 run that was capped off by a McGee three with 11:33 left to make it 16-14 Detroit. Shortly after, the Titans went on another run, this time outscoring the Phoenix 9-0 over a three-minute stretch to take a 30-18 lead with 6:43 left in the frame. The hosts maintained that lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 43-31 lead into the break. McGee scored 12 of his 20 in the first.

Detroit Mercy kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 61-42 advantage before Green Bay went on an 11-0 run, finished off by Ansong's layup, to shrink the deficit to 61-53 with 8:57 to go in the contest. Detroit Mercy responded and outscored the Phoenix the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-62. Green Bay took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 31 points in the lane.

GAME NOTES

» The Green Bay bench outscored the Titans, 23-20.
» McGee scored 20 points in his Horizon League Tournament debut. It's the fifth time he's scored 20+ this season.
» Green Bay got a game-high nine rebounds from McGee.
» Randy Tucker chipped in with eight points in 21 minutes.
» The Titans were in an offensive groove all night, shooting 54.4-percent from the floor and 47.4-percent from three.
