GREEN BAY, Wis. – Home runs from
Jadin Justman and
Becca Edwards in the sixth inning of game two secured a split on Sunday for the Green Bay softball team. The Phoenix dropped game one 5-2 before taking game two 6-2. Northern Kentucky took the weekend series two games to one.
GAME 1 | Northern Kentucky 5, Green Bay 2
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Green Bay scratched across a run off of Norse starting pitcher Lauryn Hicks when senior
Isabella Curtin tripled in Edwards.
The Norse then tied the ballgame at one before the Phoenix came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Green Bay pushed across a run on graduate student
Alicia Peters' RBI double, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of GB. The Phoenix was unable to hold the lead, as Northern Kentucky scored four times over the remaining three innings to grab the 5-2 win.
Freshman
Abigail Gawlinski (4-3) got the ball to start for Green Bay (7-12, 0-1) and took the loss. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up five runs, three earned, on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out four.
Curtin led the way offensively for the Phoenix, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple and an RBI. Peters provided a standout game at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Edwards also helped out, going 1-for-3 with a double. Senior
Tiffany Giese was also strong at the dish, going 1-for-2 with a walk.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 6, Northern Kentucky 2
Green Bay put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning with a Peters' home run. GB tacked on another run in the third when Giese came across to score on a Norse field error, which brought the score to 2-0 in favor of the Phoenix.
Northern Kentucky fought back to tie the ballgame at two before Green Bay reclaimed a 6-2 advantage in the sixth inning thanks to the aforementioned homers from Justman and Edwards.
Senior Brittany
Baneck (3-7) got the win out of the bullpen for Green Bay (8-13, 1-2). The right-hander went 2.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, walking three and striking out six.
In the batter's box, the Phoenix was paced by Edwards, who went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Peters put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a walk, and an RBI.

» The Phoenix power output was led by Edwards, who picked up two extra-base hits in the ballgame.
» Green Bay hitters hit three home runs in the ballgame, the most in a game this year.

WHAT'S NEXT
GB continues its longest homestand of the year on Friday at 1 p.m. when they welcome Purdue Fort Wayne for the first game of a three-game set. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 26 starting at noon. Following, the Phoenix will host a doubleheader against St. Thomas on Tuesday, March 29, with first pitch set for noon.
