INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The offense was clicking for the Green Bay softball team on Friday, scoring 17 runs across two games and sweeping their doubleheader against IUPUI. The Phoenix won game one in five innings, 11-3, before taking game two 6-3. The Phoenix clinched a Horizon League Championships berth with the wins, its first since the 2016 season.
GAME 1 | Green Bay 11, IUPUI 3
Green Bay got the scoring started early, plating two runs in both the first and second innings. Jadin Justman opened the scoring with a productive out, grounding out with the bases loaded and bringing a run home. Becca Edwards would follow with a single to left, bringing in Randi McKay. McKay would score again in the second after Alicia Peters scorched a double into left field, making it 4-0 for Green Bay.
IUPUI was able to get on the board in the third with one run and threatened to score more, but Hailey Pop would strike out and strand two runners, keeping it a three-run game.
The floodgates opened in the fourth when Green Bay erupted for seven runs to break open the game for a 10-run lead. It began with a bases-loaded single into center for Justman before Peters ripped a two-RBI single that made it 7-1. The Phoenix would get some help thanks to a wild pitch by Jaguars' starter Madison Bryant, allowing Peters to score. Gracie Peterson would get in on the action with an RBI-single, McKay would walk with the bases loaded, and Justman would tack on another RBI single before the inning concluded. GB totaled 14 plate appearances in the frame, recording those seven runs on just four hits.
Baneck was dealing in game one, tossing all five innings while allowing just two earned runs, two walks, and four strikeouts. In her last four outings, the Green Bay native has surrendered just six earned runs (nine total) in 21 innings worked.
Justman and Peters each went two-for-three, while Justman tallied two RBIs and Peters three.

» Bryant, who came into the game with a 2.75 ERA, surrendered eight runs (seven earned) in just three innings. She walked five and gave up seven hits in 23 batters faced.
GAME 2 | Green Bay 6, IUPUI 3
Just as they did in game one, Green Bay's offense set the tone in game two by plating two runs in the first inning. McKay lined a triple into center field, allowing Tiffany Giese to score. Samantha Saloun followed with a productive out, grounding to the shortstop and bringing in McKay.
Neither team would score until the Jaguars struck for three in the bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead. Mackenzie Myars reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Morgan Gilbert. Two batters later, Jaylin Calvert lifted a double into the outfield, playing Ashley Shelton and Hailey Pop. Pop was able to score on a throwing error by Isabella Curtin.
The lead would not last long, as the Phoenix came back right away in the top of the fourth and reclaimed the lead with two more runs . Giese walked with the bases loaded and McKay hit a sacrifice fly to right. Green Bay would add some insurance in the sixth when McKay torched a single up the middle, scoring Giese. Saloun would follow up with a single to right, plating McKay to make the score 6-3.
Abby Gawlisnki, despite allowing 11 hits, held the Jaguars to just three runs (two earned) and didn't walk anybody after facing 33 batters. She struck out two and improved her record to 8-5 on the season with the win.
GAME NOTES
» Four Phoenix had multiple hits in the ballgame.
» Green Bay pitchers limited IUPUI to just 2-for-15 (.133) with runners in scoring position.
» IUPUI senior Hailey Pop went 4-for-4 with a double.
» Despite the team combining for 23 runs on the day, there were no home runs hit.
» The top three players in GB's lineup combined to go 6-for-10, scoring two runs and tallying all six RBIs.
UP NEXT
Green Bay will go for the sweep against IUPUI tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for noon. The Phoenix then head to Minnesota to face St. Thomas in a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 2 beginning at 2:00 p.m.
