Softball Walks-Off St. Thomas in Game One, Falls in Game Two

GREEN BAY, Wis. – A Samantha Saloun walk-off single won game one for the Green Bay softball team over St. Thomas on Wednesday afternoon. The Phoenix dropped game two thanks to the Tommies offense exploding for 13 runs.

GAME 1 | Green Bay 7, St. Thomas 6

St. Thomas jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to Cassidy Carby's two-run shot in the first. However, the Phoenix would answer quickly, scoring two runs apiece in the first and second innings. In the opening frame, Saloun tattooed a home run over the left-center field wall to bring home senior Tiffany Giese. Senior Samantha Soley followed with a two-run blast that gave GB a 4-3 lead that would hold until the seventh inning.

Sarah Hudson, who finished 2-for-3 in the opening game, launched a three-run homer that gave the lead back to St. Thomas in the seventh. Yet, it wasn't enough.

It was the Sam Show once again when Soley knocked a double to right-center that scored sophomore Katie Joten to bring the game back to 6-5. A few batters later, Saloun ended the game with a two-RBI single.

GAME NOTES
» Each team collected seven hits and one error.
» Brittany Baneck pitched a complete game for GB and got the win to improve to 6-7 on the year.
» Five different batters collected a hit for the Phoenix.
» St. Thomas left seven on base, compared to just two for GB.
» Soley's home run was her first of the season.
» A total of four home runs were hit in the game, two by each team.

GAME 2 | St. Thomas 13, Green Bay 3

The St. Thomas offense wasn't slowed down much in either game, but they exploded in game two for 13 runs, including six in the first two frames. Carby did damage in game two as well, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Her two-RBI double opened the scoring in the first inning.

Green Bay attempted a comeback, crawling back into the game when Giese brought in a pair of runners on a single in the third. Graduate student Alicia Peters tacked on her eighth home run of the season in the fourth, but St. Thomas would score seven more runs between the fifth and sixth innings, pulling away for the 13-3 win.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay pitching surrendered 16 hits in the loss.
» Ashley Brewer and Peters each had a two-for-two effort at the plate.
» Isabella True tossed a solid six innings for the Tommies, striking out four and allowing just six Green Bay hits.

RECORD-BREAKING DAY
After two more stolen bases today, Tiffany Giese made history and broke the single season record for bases stolen in a season. Giese has stolen 16 bases through 29 games and has 19 more regular season games to go. Hailey Mohrfeld previously held the record with 14 stolen bases in 2015.

COMING UP
Green Bay will hit the road for a five-game trip that features three games at Horizon League foe UIC, and two games at St. Thomas. The action begins this Saturday with a doubleheader against the Flames. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The single-game between the Flames and the Phoenix that was originally scheduled for Friday, April 8 has been moved to Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
