ST. PAUL, Minn. – In the last two non-conference games of the 2022 season, the Green Bay softball team split a doubleheader at St. Thomas, falling in game one 9-1 before bouncing back with a 5-3 win in game two.
GAME 1 | St. Thomas 9, Green Bay 1
St. Thomas took control of the game immediately with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Two coming on a two-RBI double before a three-run home run. Alicia Peters got one back in the top of the second with her Horizon League-tying 12th home run of the season.
Unfortunately, the Phoenix were unable to get any closer, as St. Thomas added four runs to their tally on the way to a 9-1 five-inning win.
Lauren King (3-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Green Bay.
In the batter's box, the Phoenix was paced by Alicia Peters, who went 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI.
GAME NOTES
» St. Thomas out-hit the Phoenix 13-2.
» Senior Tiffany Giese was the only other Phoenix besides Peters with a base hit
» St. Thomas was led offensively by Crawford, who went 3-for-3 with a home run and four RBI.
» Crawford led the Tommies pitching staff, throwing five innings of one-run ball.
» Senior Alyssa Brewer had a good day at the plate, drawing a walk in both of her at-bats.
» Green Bay left three runners on base.
GAME 2 | Green Bay 5, St. Thomas (MN) 3
The Phoenix got on the scoreboard first in game two, starting with a sac fly in the second inning from sophomore Samantha Saloun that scored sophomore Hailey Heckenlaible.
The Phoenix lost the 1-0 lead they built in the second when St. Thomas scored two in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Phoenix responded in the fourth with a three-run shot from Heckenlaible, the first of her career, to take a 4-2 lead.
Green Bay tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with an RBI single off the bat of Horizon League Player of the Week, Alicia Peters. St. Thomas put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Green Bay still held on for the 5-3 win.
Sophomore Abby Freismuth (1-1) got the win for Green Bay. The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, allowing two walks, and striking out three. Senior Brittany Baneck also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking one, and striking out four.
In addition to her three hits, Saloun had a double and a walk to lead the Phoenix. Heckenlaible was a standout as well, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, and three RBI. Peters also contributed, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
GAME NOTES
» The Phoenix out-hit the Tommies at a 9-5 clip.
» Green Bay went 4-for-8 (.500) with runners in scoring position.
» St. Thomas was led offensively by freshman Brooke Ellestad, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
» Isabelle True led the Tommies pitching staff, throwing seven innings of five-run ball.
» The Phoenix drew three walks off of Tommies pitching.
» Freismuth got her first win of the season.
COMING UP
This weekend the Phoenix will close out the regular season with a three-game series at King Park against Horizon League-leading Oakland. The Phoenix and Golden Grizzlies will start a Friday doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday's single game will start at noon, with Senior Day festivities taking place beforehand.
