Green Bay Bounces Back in Game Two, Splits Day One Doubleheader Against Oakland

GREEN BAY, Wis. – With the possibility of Green Bay hosting the Horizon League Championships in the balance, the Green Bay softball team split a doubleheader with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Friday afternoon. The Phoenix dropped game one 7-0 before responding with an 8-3 win in game two. Green Bay will host the Championships if they place higher in the standings than Youngstown State

GAME 1 | Oakland 7, Green Bay 0
Madison Jones set the tone early for Oakland, ripping a shot down the right-field line, getting just past the reach of Hailey Heckenlaible. Jones utilized her speed and ran all 240 feet around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. Jones would tack on another RBI in the second inning when she lifted a double into left field. The Golden Grizzlies scored another run in the third to make it 4-0, then three more in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Oakland's Sydney Campbell kept the Phoenix offense in check in game one, pitching seven innings of scoreless ball.

Sophomores Samantha Saloun and Jadin Justman were solid for Green Bay, each going 2-for-4. Katie Joten finished 2-for-3 after entering early in the game for Gracie Peterson. Despite collecting nine hits, the Phoenix never got a run across home plate.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay had the bases loaded twice with two outs.
» The Phoenix committed four errors, compared to Oakland's one.
» Brittany Baneck surrendered seven runs but was charged only four in six innings worked.
» Tiffany Giese and Joten each recorded a stolen base.

GAME 2 | Green Bay 8, Oakland 3
Oakland jumped after Jones tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the first before Green Bay responded in a big way. The Phoenix loaded the bases before Justman launched a grand slam over the left-field wall, her seventh blast of the season that gave GB a 4-1 lead. The Phoenix would add three runs in the fifth, first when Saloun reached on a Jones error. Justman ensued with an RBI single to left before Alicia Peters grounded into a double play that scored Justman from third. GB added an insurance run in the sixth when Giese reached on another error by Jones, scoring Isabella Curtin

Oakland attempted to mount a late comeback with a run in the sixth, but it was too little too late.

Cammie Brummitt and Jones each hit a solo home run for Oakland.

Abby Gawlinski continued to impress with a strong seven innings, giving up just three runs. With the win, she improved to 9-5 on the season.

GAME NOTES
» Justman's grand slam marked the first lead Green Bay had between games one and two. The Phoenix would hold the lead the rest of the game.
» Gawlinski recorded every out either via groundout, flyout, or popout. She did not strike out any Golden Grizzlies.
» Oakland committed four errors, compared to none from the Phoenix.
» Giese swiped two stolen bases, while Saloun and Curtin recorded a stolen base.
» Justman totaled five RBIs in the game.
» Green Bay's first four batters (Giese, Joten, Saloun, and Justman) combined to go 5-for-12, scoring seven of the eight runs.

Green Bay and Oakland will wrap up the three-game series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon on GB's Senior Day. Samantha Soley, Isabella Curtin, Aubrey Drohner, Alyssa Brewer, Greta Thompson, Alicia Peters, and Crystal Guzman will all be honored pregame.
