Phoenix Mounts Late Comeback, Falls Just Short on Senior Day

GREEN BAY, Wis. - An outstanding offensive output was not enough for the Green Bay softball team to overcome Oakland on Saturday. The Phoenix tallied seven runs, but could not hold the Golden Grizzlies at bay, and were bested 8-7.

Oakland got ahead early after a run in the first inning followed up by four more in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead.

The Phoenix first got on the board in the bottom of the second after sophomore Katie Joten walked with the bases loaded to bring home senior Isabella Curtin.

The Phoenix closed the gap further in the third, managing to push across two more runs to make it a 5-3 ballgame.

The Green Bay offense stayed hot in the fourth, pushing across two more to even it up at five. Sophomore Jadin Justman had the big hit in the inning, driving home two runs on a single to left center.

The Golden Grizzlies busted up the tie with one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take an 8-5 lead heading in to the seventh inning. The Phoenix mounted a comeback attempt that started with a two-RBI single from senior Samantha Soley scored seniors Crystal Guzman and Alicia Peters, cutting the Oakland lead to 8-7. GB got the tying run to second base, but couldn't bring it home to force extra innings.

Offensively, GB was led by Justman, who went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI. Peters and Curtin were both strong at the dish as well, finishing 2-for-4.

HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Green Bay has already clinched a spot in the Horizon League Championships, but there is also a possibility that they'll host.
