Green Bay is 6-6 against the Mastodons, including a 1-3 road record at PFW. The two programs last met on October 22, 2021, a 1-3 loss for the Phoenix. GB and Northern Kentucky are also .500 against each other, posting a 9-9 record. The Phoenix is 2-4 at the Norse. NKU has swept the Phoenix in the previous two meetings. Green Bay will try to break a five-game skid against the Raiders in a big contest Saturday afternoon. GB's last victory over WSU was Oct. 18, 2019, a 3-1 home win for the Phoenix.
ABOUT THE MASTODONS
Steve Florio is in his ninth season with PFW. The Mastodons enter play Tuesday with a 5-8 record overall, including 1-1 in the HL. In their 3-2 victory over IUPUI last Saturday, Sydney Schiller recorded 19 kills, one of three Mastodons to reach double-digit kills. Iris Riegel tacked on 13, and Maggie Castleman chipped in with 11.
Schiller leads the team with 153 kills (3.26/set), while Taya Haffner has recorded 442 assists (9.40/set). Molly Mirabelli paces PFW with 34 blocks.
ABOUT THE NORSE
Liz Hart enters her 12th season with Northern Kentucky, boasting a tremendous 213-140. The Norse started slowly in 2022 with just a 4-9 record through the first 13 games this season. However, NKU is on a three-game winning streak as they head into the match Friday against Green Bay.
Anna Brinkmann leads the charge for NKU with 148 kills, 2.96 per set. Torie Houston is among the best setters in the Horizon League, tallying 228 assists, an average of 4.56 per set. Allie Siefke has totaled 47 blocks.
ABOUT THE RAIDERS
Travers Green is in his first season at the helm of the Wright State program and is off to a great start. The Raiders have won five straight and will begin their Friday evening match against Milwaukee with a 10-3 record.
Sam Ott, one of the top attackers in the Horizon League, has racked up 160 kills. She averages 2.96 kills per set, which is good for ninth in the conference. Lainey Stephenson is a reason for Ott's success, notching 518 kills in the team's first 13 games. Taylor Bransfield cleans up the defensive end, recording 53 blocks so far, nearly one per set.
ON A ROLL
Green Bay is the hottest team in the Horizon League, winning seven consecutive matches. Four wins have been sweeps over North Dakota, Western Illinois, IUPUI, and Robert Morris. The win streak matches the longest for the Phoenix since 2019, which started with a defeat of Youngstown State. GB was victorious over the Penguins Saturday, giving Green Bay their seventh consecutive win.
KILLIN' IT!
Alexandra Zakutney has again been a dominant force for the Phoenix. She paces the team in kills (189) and points (219.5). Zakutney is good for third in the Horizon League in kills, only behind Oakland's Patti Cesarini (205) and Youngstown State's Paula Gursching (238), who the Phoenix faced over the weekend. The Ontario, Canada native had a team-leading 400 kills last year, best for sixth in the HL.
OH MY GROMOS
Angie Gromos, a grad transfer from Northern Illinois, has been a force for Green Bay this season. She leads all GB players with 73.0 blocks. The West Chicago, Illinois native paces the conference with 1.22 blocks per set. Gromos and Tiffany Paalman (who has 69.0 blocks, second on the team) make a solid 1-2 punch in the middle for the Phoenix. The pair is also two of the most efficient attackers in the HL. Paalman leads the league with a .380 while Gromos sits second with a .358.
