Volleyball Finishes out Redbird Classic with Sweep of Oral Roberts

NORMAL, Ill. --The Green Bay volleyball team racked up 11 blocks on the way to a 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-19, 25-20) against the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles Saturday at Redbird Arena. 

The out-of-conference win improved Green Bay's overall record to 3-3 on the season after the Phoenix went 1-1 on day one of the Redbird Classic.

Angie Gromos finished with 10 kills on the day to lead the Phoenix attack while finishing with a hitting percentage of .556. Defensively, GB had two players reach double figures in digs as Kayla Lass had 15 and Calli Gentry had 11. From the front row, Tiffany Paalman contributed seven blocks and Shannon Coughlin added six rejections.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 | The Phoenix won the first point and never looked back to win the first set 25-13. Green Bay opened up its biggest lead, 12 points, to close out the set. Green Bay also supplemented their offense with five aces in the opening set. got a solid defensive performance from a front row that blocked five Oral Roberts attacks.

SET 2 | Green Bay won the second set 25-19 to swiftly grab a 2-0 lead. Strong serving helped the Phoenix take the set as Green Bay recorded five aces in the set win. The Phoenix opened up a 23-16 lead and coasted to victory from there.

SET 3 | Green Bay then sealed the sweep with a victory in set number three. The Phoenix took set three 25-20 after taking the lead for good at 19-18. Green Bay's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking six Oral Roberts attacks. 
 

GAME NOTES
» Alexandra Zakutney had a match-high four aces in the win.
» Tiffany Paalman had a match-high seven blocks.
» The Green Bay front row did a great job defensively, picking up 11 blocks in the match.
» Green Bay served up five aces on the way to a first-set victory.
» Green Bay served up five aces on the way to a second-set victory.
» Angie Gromos had a team-high 10 kills with no errors for Green Bay.
» Green Bay got a team-high 15 digs from Kayla Lass.
» Green Bay attackers were helped by a match-high 29 assists from Calli Gentry.

PERFORMANCE TO REMEMBER
After strong weekends, Gromos and Gentry were named to the Redbird Classic All-Tournament Team.

UP NEXT
The Phoenix head to the Ball State Tournament next weekend in Muncie, Ind., and will face Alabama and Arkansas State on Friday, followed by a match against the host Ball State on Saturday.
