GREEN BAY, Wis. – Two more road games will conclude a four-game trip away from home for the Green Bay women's basketball team this weekend. The Phoenix will clash against Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday evening before facing Cleveland State, who is currently in first place in the Horizon League. Cleveland State is 6-0 in the Horizon League and has won 15 straight games.

Green Bay is undefeated against PFW all-time with a 6-0 record, playing four of their six contests against the Mastodons on the road. The Phoenix and Purdue Fort Wayne last met on February 24, 2022, when GB took care of business with a 73-57 win in Fort Wayne. GB has a long history with the Vikings, posting a dominant 67-9 against Cleveland State. The programs first met on January 19, 1989, with Green Bay defeating CSU in 19 of the first 20 contests. Despite having just nine wins against GB, CSU has had Green Bay's number in the postseason recently. They knocked Green Bay out of the Horizon League Championships the past two seasons, including their last matchup on March 7, 2022, when CSU won 69-42 in the semifinal round.
ABOUT THE MASTODONS
Maria Marchesano is in her 2nd season with Purdue Fort Wayne, notching a 14-32 record. Amellia Bromenschenkel leads the Mastodons in multiple categories, averaging 12.3 points per contest and 4.9 rebounds per game. PFW gets after it defensively, ranking first in the Horizon League in steals per game (9.94) and second in blocks per game (3.69). The Mastodons also make the fourth-most three point field goals in the HL, averaging 7.5 per game.
ABOUT THE VIKINGS
Chris Kielsmeier is in his 5th season as head coach of Cleveland State's program. Kielsmeier has led the Vikings to two 20+ win seasons and is on pace to surpass that mark again, guiding CSU to a 15-1 start this season. Cleveland State dropped their season-opener 54-87 to No. 8 Iowa State but have ripped off 15 in a row since.
One of the top offensive threats in the Horizon League, Destiny Leo paces the Vikings, scoring 17.1 points per game. Leo scores efficiently in multiple ways, shooting 44.3 percent from the floor, 37.8 percent from three, and 90.9 percent from the free throw line. Brittni Moore is another threat for the Vikings, averaging just over 12 points per game while Amele Ngwafang leads CSU with 6.5 rebounds per contest.
LAST MATCHUP
A big third quarter helped the Phoenix grab a 70-53 win at Northern Kentucky on January 7. GB has won nine straight and is 5-1 in Horizon League action. The Phoenix will need one more win to match their longest win streak from a season ago. The Phoenix had four players score in double figures, led by Cassie Schiltz, who tied a career-high 18 points and finished with five assists and five rebounds. Bailey Butler, Jasmine Kondrakiewicz, and Maddy Schreiber each chipped in with 11 points as well. Green Bay held Northern Kentucky to just 31.2 percent from the field.
SHINING SCHILTZ
Cassie Schiltz had her best game of the 2022-23 campaign in Green Bay's last matchup at Northern Kentucky. She tied her career-high in points (18) while shooting 6-of-10 from the field. She also grabbed five rebounds, marking the fourth time in the last five games that she has totaled five or more rebounds.
LET IT FLY LEVY
Sydney Levy has the hot hand through 15 games this season. Since her first start of the season on December 10 against North Dakota State, Green Bay is 8-0 (five home games, three away). She also posted her first double-double versus Oakland on December 29. in those eight games, she has averaged:
- 12.5 points
- 4.8 rebounds
- 1.3 assists
- 48 percent shooting from the field
- 30.5 percent from beyond the arc
- 26 minutes
MONEY MADDY
Sophomore forward Maddy Schreiber has been dominating the floor for Green Bay. She has started all 15 games this season and is second in scoring on the team (10.1 PPG), only behind Sydney Levy's 10.9 points per contest. Schrieber is effective inside and outside the arc, shooting 52.9 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Maddy also averages 3.9 rebounds per game, the most on the team (minimum 9 games played).
OFFENSE ON POINT
Green Bay's offense has drastically improved from last season. Going into Thursday's matchup at Wright State, the Phoenix averages 69.1 points per contest, compared to 61.9 PPG last season. GB has scored 70 or more points nine times this season, already matching that total from last year. Green Bay has shot better than their opponent in 12 games and is 12-1 when leading at the half, creating a recipe for success that has led to nine wins in a row.
DYNAMITE DEFENSE
Green Bay is suffocating opposing offenses this season, allowing just 55.8 points per contest. The Phoenix ranks 23rd in the nation in scoring defense and first in the Horizon League. The Phoenix has held opponents to less than 60 points 10 times and less than 70 points 12 times, accumulating 10 wins in those 12 matchups. GB surrendered 33 points against Detroit Mercy on December 31, the fewest since giving up just 30 against Cleveland State in the 2019 Horizon League Quarterfinal matchup. Last season, GB ranked 23rd in the nation in scoring defense.
BAILEY BUCKETS
Reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year Bailey Butler has been heating up recently. She reached double figures in the past two games, and over the last four games, she's averaged:
- 8.5 points
- 5.3 rebounds
- 3.3 assists
JAS IT UP
Jasmine Kondrakiewicz has been a major contributor off the bench and recently as a starter this season. In her third season with Green Bay, Kondrakiewicz is shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from deep, which are career-bests. The Milwaukee, Wisconsin native is also effective from the free throw line, shooting 73.5 percent. She averages 7.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 16.7 minutes per game.
WIN FROM WITHIN
Thirteen of GB's 15 players come from inside the state border. Only Jenna Guyer (Circle Pines, Minn.) and Tatum Koenig (West Branch, Iowa) are not from Wisconsin. Natalie McNeal, a Germantown native, and Brehna Evans, from De Pere, returned to their cheesehead heritage after transferring this past offseason.
