HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Green Bay men's basketball will hit the road to begin a four-game road trip against Northern Kentucky. The Phoenix will be on the road through February 6, facing Wright State (January 28), IUPUI (February 4), and Milwaukee (February 6).
On Tuesday afternoon, Director of Athletics Josh Moon announced that Green Bay men's basketball coach Will Ryan was relieved of his coaching duties. Assistant coach Freddie Owens will assume duties as the Interim Head Coach through the remainder of the 2022-23 season.

Green Bay is 5-11 against Northern Kentucky and 33-37 versus Wright State. The Phoenix is 2-4 when traveling to Kentucky, including their last trip to NKU, when GB lost 79-74 on December 30, 2021. GB last met with the Norse earlier this month on January 14, a 74-53 loss at home.
GB is 9-26 when playing Wright State away from home, including a tight 72-69 loss on January 1, 2022. The Phoenix lost their last matchup against the Raiders, 99-67 at the Resch Center.
ABOUT THE NORSE
Darrin Horn is in his 4th season with Northern Kentucky, boasting a 70-40 record.
Marques Warrick, one of the top scorers in the conference, averages 19.0 points per game. Chris Brandon cleans up well on the glass, grabbing 9.1 rebounds per contest. Warrick was the top scorer of the January 14 game between the Norse and Phoenix, pouring in 21 points with five made three pointers.
ABOUT THE RAIDERS
Scott Nagy entered his 7th season with Wright State in 2022. The Delta State graduate of 1988 has posted a 142-73 entering their Thursday night matchup versus Milwaukee. Trey Calvin, another electric scorer in the Horizon League, averages 19.1 points per game. Brandon Noel is the top rebounder on WSU, pulling down 8.1 RPG. Noel had a monster game against GB the last time these two teams matched up, going for 32 points and 12 points.
LAST MATCHUP
Randy Tucker paced the Phoenix with 11 points and seven rebounds as Green Bay fell 72-38 to Robert Morris at home on Jan. 21. Clarence Cummings III and Jack Rose chipped in another six points each. Nate Jenkins, Brock Heffner, and Zane Short recorded blocks for GB. Short and Garren Davis registered two steals apiece. The Phoenix held RMU to 19 points in the first half and forced the Colonials into 17 turnovers.
NEW BEGINNINGS
Assistant coach Freddie Owens was named Interim Head Coach on January 24. Owens has over 15 years of coaching experience. He was a two-year starter and four-year letter winner at Wisconsin, where he was the co-captain of the Badgers' 2002 and 2003 Big Ten regular-season and 2004 Big Ten tournament championship teams. Previous stops include Loyola-Maryland, College of the Holy Cross, Utah Valley State, Oregon State, and Iowa State. Owens grew up in Milwaukee and attended Washington High School, where his team finished as a state runner-up in 1996 and 2000.
DOMINANT DAVIS
Garren Davis has been on a roll as of late. Davis reached double figures in four consecutive games from January 7 to January 19. He racked up 31 or more minutes in that same stretch. The Dallas, Texas native dropped a season-high 18 points at Cleveland State on January 7. He capped off the four-game stretch by pouring in 17 points against Youngstown State on January 19 and tying a season-high by grabbing six rebounds.
MAKIN' MEYER
Sophomore Cade Meyer has been consistent for Green Bay. The second-year big man from Monroe, Wisconsin leads the team in field goals made and field goal percentage (86-of-150, 57.3 percent). Meyer is best at giving Green Bay second chances, racking up a team-leading 21 offensive rebounds and 58 on the defensive end. Meyer is second on the team in minutes (27.3 mpg).
COUNT ON CUMMINGS
Clarence Cummings III has provided consistency in his first season as a phoenix. Cummings, an Orlando native, is shooting 46.1 percent from the field and averages 10.0 points per game, good for second on the team. He is also third in rebounds per game (3.3). Cummings has been a mainstay on the floor for Green Bay, leading the team with 29.7 minutes per game.
WHAT DO YOU ZAE?
Sophomore guard Zae Blake has been a difference-maker in his first season with Green Bay. Despite missing two games, Blake ranks at or near the top of most statistical categories on the team, including:
- 1st in three-point percentage (19-of-41, 46.3 percent)
- 2nd in rebounds (3.5 RPG)
- 1st in assists (3.1 APG)
- 1st in steals (1.2 SPG)
- 2nd in field goal percentage (61-of-121, 50.4 percent)
- 3rd in points (9.4 ppg)

Green Bay begins a four-game road trip that will go through February 6. The Phoenix will face Wright state on January 28 before traveling to Indianapolis to battle the IUPUI Jaguars on February 4. GB will clash against in-state rival Milwaukee on February 6.
