HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – A big third quarter from the Green Bay women's basketball team helped the Phoenix grab a 70-53 win at Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. GB has won nine straight and moved to 5-1 in Horizon League action. The Phoenix will need one more win to match their longest win streak from a season ago.
The Phoenix (12-3, 5-1) had four players score in double figures, led by Cassie Schiltz, who tied a career-high 18 points and finished with five assists and five rebounds. Bailey Butler, Jasmine Kondrakiewicz and Maddy Schreiber each chipped in with 11 points as well.
"Great win for our crew," said head coach Kevin Borseth. "We took care of the ball and shared it offensively. I thought we played well on the defensive end as well."
The Green Bay offense was very productive from downtown, pouring in eight threes on 18 attempts. Schiltz was the most prolific shooter for the Phoenix, draining four treys out of five attempts in the contest.
The Green Bay defense held Northern Kentucky shooters to only 31.2 percent from the field, including 24 percent from three-point range.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay started off strong, putting together a 10-5 lead after a layup from Kondrakiewicz with 5:22 left in the opening quarter. The Norse would could that lead to three before quarters' end, going into the second down three at 19-16.
Both teams traded baskets for a majority of the second quarter until the final minute when a Schreiber layup and a Butler three gave the Phoenix a 36-27 lead heading into half. Green Bay dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 17 points close to the basket.
The difference in the game came largely in the third quarter, where GB outscored the Norse 20-10. GB used a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Schiltz, to grab a 19 point lead that they maintained heading into the fourth, 56-37.
The Norse narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Phoenix still cruised the rest of the way for the 70-53 win. Green Bay took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 14 points in the paint.
