CHAMPS! Green Bay Takes Down Oakland in Horizon League Championship

Program earns fifth overall title, makes history in several ways

ROCHESTER, Mich. – History has been made! The Green Bay men's soccer team is Horizon League Champions! The No. 2-seeded Phoenix took down No. 1-seeded Oakland by a final of 1-0, giving GB an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Green Bay last won the Horizon League Tournament in 2009, with the last overall championship coming in 2017 (regular season). Green Bay also won on Oakland's turf for the first time since 1978.

The Phoenix collected their 10th victory of the year, winning their sixth straight match with the victory. Chris Album, Christoph Schurz, Rohin Kapila, and Keegan Walker were tabbed to the All-Tournament Team, with Walker garnering Tournament MVP honors.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were sluggish to start the contest. Each squad committed several fouls in the first dozen minutes, but the Phoenix finally found a rhythm in the 13th minute when Josh Johansen blasted the game's first shot wide left. GB would pound out four more shots, including one on goal by Jaden Prado, but failed to score. The game was knotted at 0-0 when Christoph Schurz found Myles Sophanavong, who lofted a perfect pass to Chris Album. Green Bay's leading scorer leaped and headed the ball just past the outstretched arms of Oakland goalkeeper Finn Jurak, giving the Phoenix a 1-0 advantage. The Golden Grizzlies found some life leading up to the break, recording two shots, but Oakland was contained by the Horizon League's best defense. Jace Foster put one of the shots on goal but Goalkeeper of the year Tobias Jahn tallied a save, taking GB's 1-0 advantage into the locker room.

Coming out of intermission, the game was similar to the beginning of the first half. Both teams had just one shot recorded through the first 16 minutes. The Phoenix had their toughest task of the game in the 67th minute. Oakland was in the box attacking after a Johansen foul when Sebastian Nuzzo fired a shot on goal, but Jahn made another great save. Nuzzo's shot was one of the last chances Oakland had, as the Golden Grizzlies notched just two more shots before the final whistle. The Phoenix staved off Oakland, capturing the program's fifth-ever Horizon League title (two regular season, three tournament) in an instant classic, winning 1-0.
