Green Bay's Magical Season Ends at NCAA Tournament

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - One of the best seasons in Green Bay men's soccer history came to an end Thursday afternoon in a 3-0 loss to the Western Michigan Broncos in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Western Michigan stayed undefeated at home this season while handing GB its first road loss of 2023.

Green Bay finished the season with a 10-4-5 overall record, tallying the first 10+ win season since 2011.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Western Michigan started out hot, recording the first shot of the contest in the 2nd minute. Both teams went back-and-forth for a little longer until Charlie Sharp buried the opening score in the 11th minute unassisted. The Phoenix pick up momentum the rest of the half, outshooting WMU 8-2 leading into the break. GB had a five-minute stretch where three shots on goal (SOG) were recorded, beginning wiht Tommy Coughlin's in the 23rd minute. Broncos goalkeeper Ethan Brandt made his first save of the day before notching another save in the 25th minute after Josh Johansen chipped in. Keegan Walker was able to blast another SOG but Brandt kept the Phoenix scoreless, keeping the score 1-0 at half in favor of WMU.

The game slowly got away from GB after intermission. Green Bay was able to tally just two shots in the first 28 minutes of action, while Western Michigan opened the game with two goals in that span. Sharp, who led the Broncos in goals coming into the NCAA Tournament, scored all three goals. The Phoenix tried to close the gap towards the end but it wasn't enough in the 3-0 loss.

GAME NOTES

  • Walker and Johansen combined for six of GB's 14 shots.
  • Seven combined yellow cards were handed out.
  • WMU had 10 corner kicks to GB's eight.
