Phoenix Set to Take on No. 4 Northern Kentucky in HL Semifinals

DAYTON, Ohio – The stage is set. The Green Bay volleyball team will take on No. 4 seed Northern Kentucky in the Horizon League Semifinals tomorrow at 5 p.m. CT. Fans can follow the match with live stats or by watching on ESPN+.

SERIES-LY SPEAKING
Green Bay fared well against the Norse this season, sweeping the season series. The Phoenix took the first match in Green Bay 3-2 before traveling to Highland Heights, Ky. to sweep the Norse on Nov. 3. Historically, the two teams are dead even, each having won 12 games of the 24 in the series history.

GB and NKU have played each other in the Horizon League Tournament three times since the 2015 season, with NKU holding a 2-1 advantage. The Norse knocked the Phoenix out of the Horizon League Semifinals last season in Dayton, 3-0.

THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM
Green Bay is in pursuit of its third Horizon League Tournament Championship, and first since 2018, the first year of head coach Abbey Sutherland's tenure. The Phoenix beat Northern Kentucky 3-0 in the 2018 Horizon League Championship game. The last time GB entered the conference tournament as a No. 2 seed was 2016.

FIRST TEAM PHOENIX
Thursday afternoon, the Horizon League announced the All-League awards, with Tiffany Paalman and Hannah Vanden Berg earning First Team honors. Calli Gentry received the league's first ever Sportsmanship Award as well. Vanden Berg led the team and finished sixth in the HL with 375 kills, 3.23. per set. Vanden Berg also led the league in aces per set, averaging 0.47. She racked up the second-most points in the HL, averaging 3.97 per set. Paalman finished third on the team with 306 kills, averaging 2.71 per set, and finished second in blocks with 91 total and 0.81 blocks per set. Paalman also led the Phoenix in hitting percentage at .286, finishing eighth in the Horizon League.

HOT AT THE RIGHT TIME
Green Bay is entering the Horizon League Tournament hot, having won six of their last seven. During the stretch, the Phoenix has a set record of 19-7.

TAKE YOUR CHANCE
Green Bay native Emma Johnson has stepped in as the starting setter after Calli Gentry suffered a season-ending knee injury earlier this season. Since her first start against South Dakota on Sept. 14, Johnson has racked up 862 assists, which is 10.14 per set, the second-most in the HL. She has finished with 40+ assists 14 times this season.
