CANCUN, Mexico -Â Green Bay women's basketball got a solid effort from Maddy Schreiber but fell to the Maryland Terrapins 59-68 Friday afternoon.
Schreiber led the Phoenix (3-2) with 12 points, and Callie Genke added 11. Bailey Butler, Natalie McNeal, and Natalie Andersen had nine points apiece. Maryland (3-3) was paced by Shyanne Sellers' game-high 23 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay started the game on a great note, taking a 10-2 lead with 5:30 to go in the opening quarter. Butler opened the contest with a triple before Schiltz capped the run with a three. Maryland slowly worked back into the game, cutting the deficit to three at 12-9 after Faith Masonius made a mid-range jumper. Andersen would respond with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give the Phoenix a 17-11 advantage going into the second quarter. GB kept an arms-length of a lead for most of the quarter, extending the lead to eight at 27-19 after Schreiber sunk a 15-footer. The Terrapins would sneak their way back again, ending the first half on a 10-3 run. Four Maryland players would score during the run, including Bri McDaniel, who totaled four points. Sellers would go one-for-two from the line, sending the teams into the halftime break with a score of 30-29 in favor of GB.
Butler and Genke opened the second half for a combined five points, making it 35-29 with 7:32 remaining in the frame. Maryland wouldn't allow a lead bigger than six and eventually took the lead at the end of the quarter. The Phoenix would cool off, tallying just five points in the final 3:51. Sellers scored seven points in that stretch, helping the Terrapins take a 45-44 lead into the fourth quarter. The Terps wouldn't relinquish the late third-quarter lead. Schreiber made a layup to make it a one-point deficit, but the Phoenix would shoot just 4-for-18 in the frame. Maryland would ice the game at the charity stripe, ending Green Bay's three-game winning streak.
