CANCUN, Mexico – ANOTHER UPSET! Green Bay women's basketball secured their second win over an AP-Top 25 ranked team with a 59-48 victory over undefeated No. 23 Washington State Saturday afternoon. The last time Green Bay won two games against an AP-Top 25 team was during the 2017-18 season when GB took down #24 Arizona State (at the Cancun Challenge) and #23 Marquette at the Kress Center. Head Coach Kevin Borseth is just two wins away from capturing his 800th career win.
The Phoenix (4-2) responded with the victory after a loss yesterday to Maryland. Maddy Schreiber, as she did on Friday, paced the squad with a dozen points. Jenna Guyer impressed off the bench with 11, and Bailey Butler added 10 more. Natalie McNeal finished in a three-way tie for a game-high six rebounds. Washington State suffered their first loss of the 2023-24 campaign, despite a solid game from Charlisse Leger-Walker (17 points) and Tara Wallack (16 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams began sluggish in the opening frame, combining for a 2-for-20 start from the floor. Guyer and Schiltz provided sparks towards the end of the quarter, with the former drilling a triple from the top of the key before the latter making a layup, making it 14-10 in favor of the Cougars going into the second quarter. The Phoenix cranked it up a notch, outscoring WSU 20-11. It was the Natalie McNeal and Jenna Guyer show, with the duo combining for GB's first nine points in the opening 3:34 of the frame. Wallack brought it back to within one with a layup, making it 22-21 with 3:11 left before halftime. Schreiber and Butler splashed three-pointers after that, helping give the Phoenix a 30-25 lead at the break.
Washington State came out with some fight in the third quarter, eventually tying the game at 36 after Leger-Walker, who was named Tournament MVP, finished off an and-one with 3:29 remaining in the frame. Wallack capped off the quarter with a couple of free throws, keeping it a four-point game going into the final 10 minutes. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz, McNeal, and Callie Genke dropped GB's first seven points of the frame, extending the lead to 50-41 with 7:09 remaining in the contest. Schreiber took the game into her hands and scored four consecutive points, putting GB up 54-41 with 5:34 left. Green Bay kept it on cruise control the rest of the contest, leading by no fewer than nine en route to the 59-48 victory.
