Green Bay Falters, Drops WNIT Second Round to Bowling Green

GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women's basketball team battled Thursday night, but fell to the Bowling Green Falcons, 69-51 in the second round of the WNIT. The Phoenix finished 28-6 on the season, grabbing the most wins since the program racked up 29 wins during the 2017-18 campaign.

Jasmine Kondrakiewicz led Green Bay with 11 points, two steals, and three blocks. Jenna Guyer and Natalie McNeal were strong off the bench, with the latter adding six points and two steals while Guyer chipped in with seven points, three steals, and two blocks.

Allison Day had a night for Bowling Green, notching a game-leading 25 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Falcons (29-6).

Green Bay forced 18 Bowling Green turnovers while committing 15 themselves in Monday's game. The Phoenix turned those takeaways into 18 points on the offensive end of the floor. Guyer's three steals led the way for Green Bay.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The opening frame was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team leading by more than three for all but 17 seconds. Green Bay took its largest lead of the stanza at 13-8 with 4:48 remaining after Cassie Schiltz drilled a shot from long-range. Bowling Green answered on a 9-4 run to end the quarter, thanks to Jocelyn Tate's four points and a Day triple. Tatum Koenig tied the game at 17 with a trey to end the quarter.

Both defenses locked down in the second quarter, with just 18 total points scored between the two squads. Day ignited the quarter by scoring BGSU's first two shots before McNeal floated a jumper to cut the deficit back to one at 23-22 with 5:29 left. The Falcons spread the wealth before intermission, with the final three field goals made by three different players. Lexi Fleming drained a three to extend Bowling Green's lead to eight at 30-22 right before the half. Green Bay went cold entering the break, going on a scoreless drought lasting 5:28.

Green Bay came out poised to start the second half, getting a triple from Levy and another jumper from Kondrakiewicz to get within three at 30-27 with 8:09 left in the third period. That momentum slowly faded as the Falcons went on a 16-7 run that spanned the final 7:53 of the frame. Day scored six points during the run, while Elissa Brett chipped in with seven points. GB faced a 46-34 deficit heading into the fourth quarter.

It was all fireworks in the final frame as both teams combined for 40 points. Bowling Green opened the floodgates, starting the stanza on a 9-0 run that culminated in another triple from Fleming. BGSU held their largest lead of the game, 21, at 55-34 before Callie Genke scored a layup to stop the run. The Falcons led by 15 or more for all but 46 seconds in the fourth quarter, handing Green Bay a season-ending 69-51 loss.
