GREEN BAY, Wis. - Green Bay softball returned to the diamond for their first game in nearly a week and split a doubleheader with the IUPUI Jaguars. IUPUI throttled GB in game one, but the Phoenix responded in a high-scoring affair in game two.
GAME 1 | IUPUI 11, Green Bay 0
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kendal Calvert started the scoring in the first inning, drilling a home run over the right-center field wall. It was Calvert's first home run of the season. Neither team would score again until the fourth frame when Calvert struck again, knocking a two-RBI single to right field. Rachael Gregory ensued with an RBI groundout before Kayla Freiberg got in on the action with an RBI double, extending IUPUI's lead to 5-0.
The Jaguars would bust the game wide open in the fifth, tallying six runs. Maicey Bedrick had an RBI single before Kennedy Cowan drove in Bedrick with a double. Gregory would reach on a Jadin Justman throwing error, scoring Cowan. IUPUI continued to dominate, with consecutive RBI singles via Jordan Jenkins and Victoria Sivert.
Green Bay was cold offensively, collecting just two hits. Madison Bryant was dominant in the circle for IUPUI, striking out 10 of the 18 batters she faced, helping the Jaguars roll to an 11-0 win in game one of the doubleheader.
GAME NOTES
» Giese stole two bases - both coming in the first inning - and notched both Green Bay hits.
» Bryant posted her second shutout of the season, the only two shutouts IUPUI has this season. She also struck out two or more batters in all but one inning.
» The Phoenix finished 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
GAME 2 | IUPUI 8, Green Bay 11
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the third when IUPUI pulled off a double steal. It began with Calvert stealing second, forcing a throw down to the bag, while Jaida Speth stole home. The Jaguars extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Sivert grounded a single past Justman to score Kennedy Warbritton. GB awoke from their offensive slumber in the bottom half of the frame when Randi McKay showed the clutch gene, sneaking an RBI single past Gregory at third base, getting the Phoenix on the board with two outs. Jadin Justman followed by plugging the right-center field gap for a two-RBI double, giving Green Bay a 3-2 advantage after four innings.
Cowan drew a one-out walk in the fifth and eventually scored when Gregory ripped a double to left-center, tying the game at three. Warbritto ensued with an RBI single, scoring Gregory to give the lead back to IUPUI at 4-3. Green Bay would respond immediately when Hailey Heckenlaible blasted a three-run homer over the left-center field wall, giving the Phoenix a 6-4 edge. Paeton Kringel, who pitched well last Friday against Robert Morris, held the Jaguars scoreless in the sixth.
This time, Green Bay opened the floodgates, adding five runs of insurance in the bottom of the frame. Lauren Porter delivered with a bases-clearing double, extending GB's lead to 9-4. Giese would add an RBI single before Justman reached on a fielding error by Cowan, scoring Aidyn Messmann. IUPUI wouldn't go away, scoring four runs in a seventh-inning rally. Sivert lined a double down the right field line, just a few feet inside the line, to bring in two runs. Two batters later, Bedrick got on base when Kaylin Fahy dropped what would have been the final out. Speth came to the plate representing the tying run but was retired after Kringel caught a line-drive hit back to her. Despite the rally, Green Bay held on for an 11-8 victory, avenging their game-one loss.

» Five Phoenix tallied two or more hits.
» GB 7-for-15 (.467) with runners in scoring position.
