Phoenix Responds in Game Two, Splits Doubleheader at Oakland

ROCHESTER, Mich. – After being shutout in the opening game, the Green Bay softball team responded with a 4-2 victory over the Oakland Golden Grizzlies Friday afternoon, splitting the doubleheader. TIffany Giese collected three hits on the day and inched closer to all-time Green Bay hits record, now just needing two hits to break the record at 168 set by Katie Cooney from 2007-2011.

GAME 1 | Oakland 4, Green Bay 0

HOW IT HAPPENED
Oakland struck first right away in the opening frame when Jen Krizka lined a triple to right that scored Madi Herrington. Brittany Baneck, who got the ball for GB, and Sydney Campbell, who started for the Golden Grizzlies, put on a pitching clinic for the next four innings. Both notched four strikeouts and kept the offenses at bay through the fifth inning.

Things began to get interesting in the sixth when the Phoenix had runners on second and third with just one out. Lauren Porter shot a double to the left-center gap to begin the stanza before Giese reached on an error. However, Campbell got out of the jam by getting Randi McKay to fly out to right field and Sam Saloun to groundout to third.

The Golden Grizzlies also got runners on to start the sixth and capitalized with a two-RBI single from Maci Brown followed by a sacrifice fly from Allisa DiPrima to extend their lead to 4-0. Sydney Campbell shut down the Phoenix offense in the top of the seventh and secured the win for Oakland.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay's power output was led by Paige Hanson, who had two extra base hits in the ballgame.
» Porter was the other Phoenix to hit a double in game one.
» Oakland slightly outhit the Phoenix 7-4.
» Baneck pitched all seven innings in her return from injury, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while striking out four.

The Phoenix put runs on the scoreboard first in game two, starting the scoring in the fifth inning. Green Bay's offense exploded for four runs, starting with a three-run double off the bat of Jadin Justman. Hanson added on the fourth run of the inning with a sac fly that scored Justman.

Oakland put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Phoenix still held on for the 4-2 win.

Kringel started in the circle and picked up the win for Green Bay. The right-hander went 5.1 innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out one. Baneck also made an impact in the circle for the Phoenix, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.
