Green Bay Edged Out by Oakland in Series Finale

ROCHESTER, Mich. – A back-and-forth affair on Saturday ended with a walk-off single for the Oakland Golden Grizzlies over the Green Bay softball team. With the win, Oakland took the weekend series 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Phoenix got the scoring first in the top of the third inning when a Randi McKay RBI single scored Kelly Greene from third. The Golden Grizzlies had an answer in the bottom of the third with a solo home run from Jenna Johnston.

Green Bay came back and retook the lead in the sixth inning with RBI singles from Paige Hanson and Hailey Heckenlaible to make the score 3-1. Oakland once again had an answer in the bottom of the sixth and scored two more runs to tie the game at three all.

The Phoenix was unable to get anything going in the top of the seventh inning and the Golden Grizzlies loaded the bases with two outs and got a walk-off RBI single from Leah Bieniewicz.
After pitching the first game of the series, Brittany Baneck (6-8) was back in the circle for GB. Baneck pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits.

McKay led the way offensively for the Phoenix, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Hanson put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

GAME NOTES
» Green Bay went 3-for-10 (.300) with runners in scoring position.
» Baneck limited Oakland to just 2-for-14 (.143) with runners in scoring position.
» Oakland outhit Green Bay 8-6.
» Oakland was led offensively by junior Maci Brown, who went 2-for-4 with two triples.
» Junior Sydney Campbell led the Golden Grizzlies pitching staff, throwing seven innings of three-run ball.

COMING UP
GB will have a chance to bounce back on Tuesday with a doubleheader at St. Thomas. They'll resume Horizon League play next weekend with a three-game series at Cleveland State. The Phoenix and Vikings will square off for a single game on Friday, April 14 before a doubleheader on Saturday, April 15.
