Giese Ties Hit Record, Phoenix Drops Pair at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Tuesday was a tough day for the Green Bay softball team as they fell in a doubleheader at St. Thomas 8-1 in game one and 7-1 in game two. Tiffany Giese recorded her 168th career hit in game two, tying her for the all-time record in Green Bay softball history. Giese will look to sit alone at the top this weekend against Cleveland State.
 
GAME 1 | St. Thomas 8, Green Bay 1
The St. Thomas offense came to play early, putting up five runs in the first, all of them coming with two outs. Katie Goelz put the Tommies on the board with a two-RBI single that was followed up by a Kameron Monson two-RBI double and another RBI single from Abbi Stierlen.

The score remained 5-0 St. Thomas until the Tommies added three more in the fourth inning. Brooke Ellestad drove two in with a double to right field and Coryn Jacobsen brought another run home with an RBI double to left field to make the score 8-0.

The Phoenix avoided the run-rule thanks to a Dawn Pawlak double that scored Hailey Heckenlaible in the top of the fifth inning. However, the GB offense struggled to generate additional offense and fell 8-1.  

Brittany Baneck (6-9) got the ball to start for Green Bay and took the loss. Kelly Greene was a bright spot for the Phoenix, throwing two scoreless innings in relief, allowing three hits, with no walks and two strikeouts.

At the plate, the Phoenix was paced by Pawlak, who went 1-for-1 on the day with a double and an RBI. Jadin Justman also had a solid game at the plate, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk.

» St. Thomas outhit GB at a 13-2 clip.
 » The Phoenix drew four walks from St. Thomas pitching.
 » Randi McKay showed patience at the plate, drawing two walks.
 » St. Thomas (MN) was led offensively by sophomore Brooke Ellestad, who went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
 » Sophomore Ella Cook led the Tommies' pitching staff, throwing seven innings of one-run ball.

GAME 2 | St. Thomas 7, Green Bay 1
Phoenix starter Paeton Kringel and Tommies' starter Isabelle True both put up zeroes in their first frames. However, both teams scored in the third, with the Phoenix grabbing a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Justman that scored Giese. St. Thomas responded with three runs in the bottom of the third by way of an RBI double followed by an RBI single.

The Tommies poured it on in the following innings, scoring one run in the fourth and two more in the sixth en route to their 7-1 game two victory.
 
At the plate, the Phoenix was led by Justman, who went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

COMING UP
Green Bay will return to Horizon League play this weekend when they travel to Cleveland State for a three-game set. The Phoenix and Vikings will start the series with a single game Friday at 2 p.m. CT followed by a Saturday doubleheader at noon and 2:30 p.m. CT.
