Offense Erupts as Green Bay Blasts Southern Indiana

GREEN BAY, Wis. – It was an offensive onslaught Friday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium as the Green Bay men's soccer team blew out Southern Indiana 7-0. The Phoenix has now won two in a row, both by way of shutouts.

GB improved to 2-1-0 overall, while USI fell to 0-3-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

As they did against Western Illinois, Green Bay pounded the offensive zone to begin the contest against USI. The Phoenix racked up six shots, including three from Josh Johansen. Chris Album had two shots, and Keegan Walker added another before Album buried his first goal in the 18th minute to make it 1-0 GB.

The Screaming Eagles slowed Green Bay for a few minutes after the goal, but a foul on Nick Faddis in the box led to Album scoring a penalty goal, extending GB's lead to 2-0 in the 28th minute. The Phoenix kept pouring it on, notching another goal just over four minutes later when Johansen sliced his first goal of 2023 off a pass from Andrew Paolucci.

Green Bay was relentless, attempting another four shots before the first-half buzzer. After assisting on Johansen's goal, Paolucci found the back of the net in the 44th minute, maneuvering around a Screaming Eagle defender before lining the shot off his left foot. GB entered the break up 4-0, outshooting USI 17-4.

The 15-minute break didn't cool off Green Bay on a warm September afternoon. Walker opened the floodgates with a goal just 1:07 into the frame, making it 5-0 GB. Album and Jake Parish tacked on a pair of shots, and the Phoenix struck again in the 54th minute. It was Album who scored, notching his third goal of the game. It was the first hat trick in a Green Bay men's soccer game since Audi Jepson racked up five goals in an 8-0 thrashing of Viterbo in 2014.

USI scored an own goal in the 79th minute, making it 7-0 Green Bay. With the Phoenix offense pressing, Wesley Rhodes attempted to clear the ball to Screaming Eagles goalkeeper Braden Matthews, but the ball sailed just over Matthews' head and into the net.

The Phoenix had their most dominant victory, a 7-0 shutout, since the 8-0 defeat of Viterbo in 2014.

  • Green Bay had 22 shots compared to USI's five.
