YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Green Bay volleyball team continued its undefeated Horizon League start Friday night, taking down Youngstown State in three sets (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) on the road.
The Phoenix offense was paced by Hannah Vanden Berg, who finished with 11 kills on the day while accumulating a hitting percentage of .267, and by Cora Behnke, who finished with 10 while hitting .304.Vanden Berg also finished with a season-high seven aces in the contest. GB got 14 digs from Abby Gardner to lead them defensively. Emma Johnson had 25 assists to lead the Phoenix.
Youngstown State was led by 10 kills from Abbie Householder.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | Green Bay was dominant in the first set, never trailing en route to a 25-14 set win. GB racked up seven aces to supplement the offense in the opening set.
SET 2 | Green Bay took set two 25-17 to quickly grab a 2-0 lead. The set was tightly contested, with 11 ties and six lead changes until the Phoenix rattled off a 6-0 run to finish the frame.
SET 3 | GB secured the sweep thanks to a hot start in the third set, going up 9-2. Green Bay opened up as much as an eight-point lead at 24-16 before YSU clawed back to force a Phoenix timeout after bringing the score to 24-21. GB came out of the timeout and closed the match thanks to a Penguins attacking error. The Phoenix racked up seven more aces in the third set.
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay registered a season-high 16 aces in the win.
» GB sits at the top of the Horizon League with a 3-0 HL record, tied with Milwaukee.
» The Phoenix has now won 14 straight matches against Youngstown State.
» Vanden Berg has now registered double figures in kills seven times this season, Behnke has done it 10 times.
» GB finished with a .218 attack percentage compared to a .110 attack percentage for YSU.
