GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Green Bay volleyball opened the UND Classic on Thursday afternoon, falling in four sets to the Montana Griz (17-25, 26-24, 20-25, 20-25) at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The loss moved Green Bay's record to 2-5 on the season.
The Phoenix was led by a double-double from Cora Behnke, who registered 11 kills and 13 digs. Freshman Katie Schulz had a career day, finishing with eight kills to help the attack. On the defensive end, Kendall Schara also chipped in for with 13 digs to go with five blocks from Tiffany Paalman.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | The Phoenix found themselves in an early deficit, with the Griz jumping out to an 8-1 lead to start. Montana never gave up that initial lead, and took the first set by a score of 25-17.
SET 2 | Green Bay responded and picked up a 26-24 victory in the second set, evening the match at one set apiece. The set was back and forth the entire time, with the two teams tying 13 times and exchanging the lead nine times. The Green Bay offense was aided by four aces in the stanza.
SET 3 | The third set was another close one. With Montana up 17-14, the Phoenix rattled off a 4-0 run to grab a 18-17 advantage. However, the Griz would respond by ending the set on an 8-3 run to take the frame 25-20.
SET 4 | Montana closed out the match in the fourth set with another 25-20 win. The Phoenix trailed by as many as seven points as Montana grabbed the advantage for good at 17-16 and Green Bay was never able to recover in a set that was tied up five times before the Griz again took over in the second half of the stanza.
GAME NOTES
» Green Bay had four players in double figures in digs.
» Kendall Schara had a team-high three aces in the loss.
