Green Bay's Bench Comes Alive in Victory over Detroit Mercy

The Phoenix records its first double-digit win streak since February 2023

DETROIT, Mich. - The Green Bay women's basketball team continued its run of dominance Thursday night with a 75-48 victory over the Detroit Mercy Titans.

Green Bay was led by Bailey Butler's 14 points, which paced all scorers. Three others chipped in with double figures, including Natalie McNeal (12 pts.), Cassie Schiltz (10 pts.), and Natalie Andersen with 11 points off the bench. Four Phoenix grabbed four rebounds.

Emma Trawally Porta paced the Titans (11-8, 4-4 HL) with 11 points. Irene Murua added another 10 for Detroit Mercy.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads traded baskets to begin the contest, and UDM extended its early lead to 7-4 with 7:15 remaining in the opening frame after Amaya Burch made a mid-range shot. Green Bay answered by ripping off an 11-0 run, capped by an Andersen triple, giving GB a 15-7 advantage. Detroit Mercy came back with a 6-0 run to end the quarter, ending with a Murua layup with one second left on the clock. The Phoenix had a solid second quarter, stuffing the Titans for just eight points on 4-for-12 shooting from the field. GB also forced six UDM turnovers and headed to the locker room with an 11-point lead.

The Phoenix opened the floodgates out of intermission, opening the third quarter on an 8-3 spurt. Jasmine Kondrakiewicz splashed a three to cap the run with 7:29 left in the stanza, with GB leading by 16. Green Bay took advantage of more UDM turnovers later in the frame, expanding the lead to 25 going into the fourth quarter. Butler made four consecutive free throws, and Maren Westin got in on the action with a layup at the end of the third quarter before making a nifty move in the final frame for an and-one, extending the lead to 28 at 68-40. GB led by no less than 20 in the final 10 minutes, winning its 10th consecutive game with a 75-48 victory over Detroit Mercy.

GAME NOTES
» The Phoenix had 13 second-chance points off of 10 offensive rebounds.
» Green Bay's bench scored 26 points.
» The Phoenix forced 22 Detroit Mercy turnovers while committing only 11. Green Bay also had 30 points off turnovers compared to UDM's 14.
» GB had a slight edge on the boards, 28-27.
» The Phoenix dominated the paint, racking up 36 points in the lane.
