INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Green Bay women's soccer team found themselves on the wrong side of a high-scoring affair Thursday afternoon, falling on the road to IU Indy 4-1. The Phoenix remains at five points in the Horizon League and is currently a point behind the final HL playoff spot.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay was controlling the first quarter of the game until a challenge from Phoenix goalkeeper Mallorie Benhart. Benhart collided with a Jaguar attacker and was sent off with a red card. IU Indy capitalized on the ensuing free kick with an intuitive set piece that ended with the Jags' Cassie Rodriguez finding the back of the net. The Jaguars then doubled their lead on a goal from Hannah Roberson in the 41st minute, assisted by Bernadette Wismann. Green Bay was able to close the gap to 2-1 on a long-range goal from Aixa Helbringer-Escobar in the 44th minute, the first of her Phoenix career.
The Green & White was still able to compete in the second half despite being down a player but was unable to equalize. The Jaguars pushed it to a 3-1 lead in the 66th minute with a goal from Keilah Muldrow and once again in the 75th minute with a second Roberson goal.
GAME NOTES
- IU Indy outshot GB 16-9 and 10-4 on goal.
- Alondra Iriarte totaled four saves after coming onto the field after Benhart's ejection.
COMING UP
Green Bay will look to grab Horizon League points this weekend when they host Youngstown State for a pinkout. The Phoenix and Penguins will square off at Aldo Snataga Stadium on Sunday at 11 a.m.
