CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Green Bay volleyball team dropped a four-set contest to the Cleveland State Vikings on Friday night.
Green Bay dropped to 7-11 overall and 4-2 in Horizon League action, while CSU improved to 12-5 overall and an even 3-3 in the HL.
The Phoenix attack was paced by Katie Schulz, who finished with 13 kills, and Danilynn Schell, who had 11. Defensively, GB had three players reach double figures in digs, including Calli Gentry's 16, Abby Gardner's 14, and 10 more from Kendall Schara.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 | It was a back-and-forth battle to begin the match until CSU ripped off six consecutive points. Nia Hall and JeriLynn Koehler each had two kills to lead the Vikings' attack. The Phoenix battled back thanks to several attack errors by Cleveland State and a kill by Schell, but CSU went on a 9-1 run to end the opening set and take a 1-0 lead.
SET 2 | Green Bay quickly took a 4-2 lead in the second frame, behind kills from Schulz and Schell. Cleveland State responded with a 6-2 run, but the Phoenix answered right back with a 9-3 run and took a 15-11 advantage into a timeout. Both squads went punch-for-punch out of the break, but GB took four of the last six points, tying the match at one set apiece.
SET 3 | Cleveland State came out dominating in the third set, and it was quickly 7-2. Green Bay had a couple of attack errors and Emma Walker extended the lead to 12-4 after consecutive service aces. A Koehler kill and Lesley Marshall service ace helped Cleveland State balloon the lead to 16-6. Green Bay showed some fight, going on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to eight but CSU finished off the set on an attack error by Kirsten Fish.
SET 4 | After a slow start, GB took a 5-4 lead after a Fish kill. CSU went on a brief run before Schell and Gardner had kills to make it 8-7 in favor of the Vikings. The teams again went back and forth until Green Bay completed a 6-1 run, thanks to Fish, for a 22-19 advantage.
