Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Phoenix Downs Cleveland State, Advances to #HLMSOC Semifinal Round

Two first half goals propel GB to a rematch against No. 1 seed Oakland

GREEN BAY, Wis. – For a second consecutive year, the Green Bay men's soccer team is headed to Rochester! The No. 4 seed Phoenix defeated No. 5 seed Cleveland State 3-1 en route to the Horizon League Semifinal game.

The win boosted Green Bay's record to 11-6-2 overall, surpassing last year's win total of 10. It's the most wins for the program since 2011, also 11 under Kris Kelderman.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Green Bay began the match strong, forcing two saves by the Vikings. In the 14th minute, Luke Nicholson cashed in for the Phoenix, scoring unassisted from the box after the ball was blocked back to him. Myles Sophanavong had blasted a shot just beforehand, which led to the block. GB kept pressuring CSU, as Josh Johansen and Andrew Paolucci recorded shots on goal in the 33rd minute. Johansen's shot ricocheted to Paolucci, who had a shot deflect off a Viking in the box. Paolucci regained control and found the back of the net on his second chance, doubling the GB lead to 2-0. Cleveland State had a couple of chances late in the half but Green Bay held the 2-0 advantage going into halftime.

The Phoenix came out of the locker room sharp, getting an early goal from Sophanavong. He scored on a nifty header, set up by a great pass lofted inside by Johansen. Cleveland State outshot GB 10-7 in the second half and converted an opportunity in the 77th minute. Caleb Trowbridge scored for CSU on assists from Marko Rimac and Kyle Folds. Green Bay stiffened defensively and allowed just one shot the rest of the way, winning 3-1.

GAME NOTES
  • Green Bay had a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
  • Trowbridge and Rimac led all players with five shots.
  • Paolucci tallied four shots, all on goal.
  • Nicholson's goal was the fifth of the season, tied for second on the squad with Paolucci.

ON THE ROAD TO ROCHESTER
The Phoenix will travel to Rochester for a rematch against Oakland, who is the No. 1 seed again this year. Green Bay lost to Oakland in Rochester earlier this season but took down the Golden Grizzlies last season in the Horizon League Championship Game. Fans can watch on ESPN+ or follow with live stats.
