ABOUT THE FIGHTING HAWKS
North Dakota had to wait a little longer to start their season after its originally scheduled opener against Youngstown State was
canceled due to a power outage. The Fighting Hawks finally started the 2024-25 season with a victory over Eastern Illinois before defeating Dickinson State earlier this week. Sophomore forward Kiera Pemberton, who stands at six feet, one inch tall, is a force to be reckoned with. Despite a small sample size this season, Pemberton paces the Fighting Hawks in points (19.0 PPG), rebounds (8.0 RPG), and steals (3.0). Head coach Mallory Bernhard is in her fifth season as a collegiate HC, all spent in North Dakota.
1. COACHING AT THE ALMA MATER
Sunday's matchup will feature a pair of head coaches who are currently at the helm of a program they once played in.
Kayla Karius (Green Bay) played for the Phoenix from 2007-2011 and graduated from UW-Green Bay in 2011. North Dakota's Mallory Bernhard played for the Fighting Hawks from 2006-2011 and also graduated from ND in 2011.
2. NAT ATTACK
Natalie McNeal has been sharp to begin her 2024-25 campaign. No. 11 has made 18 of 33 field goals so far and has been a perfect six-for-six from the charity stripe. McNeal has been Green Bay's best rebounder as well, averaging eight per game. She is the only Phoenix currently with double-figure rebounds on the defensive end. McNeal is on the brink of scoring her 1,000th career point, currently with 971. Natalie also set a career-high with six assists at UIC on Wednesday.
3. GOTTA GUARD GENKE
Callie Genke has stepped up for Green Bay in the first few games. No. 12 had knocked down 10 of 16 field goals, including seven of 11 from beyond the arc. The Wrightstown, Wisconsin native knocked down all three of her shot attempts against UIC last Wednesday, helping the Phoenix to a narrow 74-71 victory.
4. SHARP-SHOOTIN' SCHREIBER
Senior guard/forward
Maddy Schreiber is another returnee for the Phoenix. In 2023-24, she finished 162-of-293 overall (55.3 percent) while drilling 41 of 97 three-points attempts (42.3 percent). She was also sharp from the charity stripe, knocking down 45 of 55 free throw attempts (81.8 percent). Maddy was second on the team in points per game (12.1), only trailing McNeal. Schreiber was a huge part of the victory at UIC last Wednesday, racking up a career-high 25 points in a season-high 35 minutes played. She shot eight of 15 from the field, including five of seven from beyond the arc.
