Green Bay Opens Resch Center Slate with SIUE Tomorrow

GREEN BAY, WIS. – After a pair of games on the road last week, the Green Bay men's basketball team is back in Green Bay, hosting SIUE tomorrow at the Resch Center at 6 p.m.

ABOUT THE COUGARS
SIUE has started the season 4-2, with their lone losses coming against the Big Ten's Indiana and Illinois. The Cougars are currently riding a three-game win streak into Green Bay, with wins over Indiana State, Western Michigan, and Canisius.
 
The Cougars have two players averaging double figures, Ray'Sean Taylor and Brian Taylor II. Ray'Sean Taylor is averaging 18.2 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game in 10.0 minutes. Brian Taylor II averages 12.0 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.
 
HISTORY VS SIUE
Green Bay and SIUE have been playing each other since 1975. The Phoenix is 3-3 all-time against the Cougars with their last win coming on December 19, 2016, by a score of 94-92. SIUE defeated Green Bay 78-69 on December 6, 2023, in their last meeting. Noah Reynolds had 20 points to lead GB, as Ray'Sean Taylor scored 23 for SIUE.
 
LAST TIME OUT
Green Bay fell to Providence 79-65 Saturday evening at Mica Mutual Pavilion. The Phoenix was tied 36-36 at halftime after a Marcus Hall layup with three seconds left. Hall started the second half on fire, knocking down three threes on three consecutive possessions to give the Phoenix a 47-41 lead with 17:14 to go. Johnson made a layup to give the Phoenix its largest lead of the game at 50-43. Providence retaliated with a 12-0 run to take a 55-50 lead. The Friars led the remainder of the way to secure its 14-point victory.
 
ROY RETURNS
After a stint at NAIA Langston University, where he was named an NAIA All-American First Teamer, Anthony Roy has returned to the Division I floor with Green Bay. After four games back in Division I, Roy has averaged 25.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game. He is also shooting 53.0 percent from the floor and 46.7 percent from three. Roy is sending waves throughout the country, ranking tied for fourth in the NCAA in points per game, while leading all D1 players in the NCAA in three pointers made per game with 5.25.
 
DOUBLE J
Freshman Jeremiah Johnson has come into his own in the past two games, scoring a career-high 15 points at Western Illinois, and 10 points and nine rebounds against Providence this past Sunday. He is also 13-of-14 this Season on free throws leading the team in makes.
 
MONEY MARCUS
After a Horizon League All-Freshman Team selection a season ago, Phoenix forward Marcus Hall has been outstanding to start the 2024-25 season. Hall is currently averaging a team-leading 35.8 minutes per game while pouring in 16.3 points to go with a team-high 5.8 rebounds per game. Hall is shooting 51.1 percent from the floor and 32.0 percent from three.
 
LET IT FLY
The Phoenix offense is predicated in large part on the three ball. Green Bay is 16th in the country in three point attempts, and 28th in the country in three point makes per game.
 
GOTTLIEB'S FIRST WIN
Green Bay head coach Doug Gottlieb picked up his first collegiate win last week at Western Illinois. The Phoenix shot well as a team, going 31-for-62 while being led by a career-high 35 points from Anthony Roy.
 
INTERNATIONAL TALENT
The 2024-25 Phoenix roster features players from three foreign countries and eight different U.S. states. Ben Tweedy is from Australia, Roee Oselka is from Israel, and Mouhamadou Cisse is from Senegal.
 
TOP 10 TURNAROUND
After a program-low 3-29 season in 2022-23, Green Bay bounced back with a resilient 18-14 record a season ago in head coach Sundance Wicks' lone season with the Phoenix, jumping from last in the Horizon League to third. That 15.0 game turnaround is tied for the 10th-best turnaround in NCAA Division I history.
 
NEW LOOK ROSTER
The Phoenix underwent a roster transformation this past off-season. Of GB's rostered players, five are returners, five are transfers, and eight are incoming freshmen.
 
FAMILIAR FACES
Multiple returners will play large roles in the upcoming 2024-25 season, including Foster WondersPreston Ruedinger, and Marcus Hall. Last season, Ruedinger averaged 8.4, Wonders averaged 7.8, and Hall averaged 6.4 points per game. Mac Wrecke and Ryan Wade are the other two returners and will be featured in Coach Gottlieb's rotation.
