Genke Ignites Phoenix to #HLWBB Championship Game

Green Bay's bench, strong finish propel second consecutive title game berth

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Callie Genke had a superb day off the bench to help spur the Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team to a 64-55 win over Purdue Fort Wayne in the 2024 Barbasol Horizon League Semifinals.

Genke led all scorers with 16 points, while Maddy Schreiber added 13 points for GB (26-6, 17-3 HL). Bailey Butler flirted with a double-double, tallying 10 assists and eight points. Cassie Schiltz hit a milestone mark early in the third quarter, becoming just the 38th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Schiltz drilled a three with 8:49 to go in the frame.

PFW finished its season at 21-12 overall and was led by a pair of 14-point performances from Amellia Bromenschenkel and Shayla Sellers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The game started sluggishly for both squads, despite GB taking an early 5-0 lead after Schreiber drained a triple. PFW began the contest 0-for-5 from the field but clawed into the game and ended the opening frame on an 11-4 run, culminating in a trey from Sellers. Neither team was spectacular shooting, with the Mastodons finishing the quarter 4-of-13 and GB 4-of-13. The Phoenix shot at a much higher clip in the second quarter, with some help off the bench from Jenna Guyer and Genke. The duo combined for 11 of GB's 21 points in the stanza, and Green Bay took a 30-27 advantage into the locker room.

Out of the break, GB maintained the lead and was up by as much as seven. A Sydney Graber and one for PFW made it 48-45 Green Bay going into the final quarter. The Phoenix tallied 16 points in the fourth quarter but didn't get their first bucket until 4:43 remained in regulation. Green Bay was down 50-48 but ripped off an 11-0 run. Genke had five points in that stretch, including a big three, while Schreiber also knocked down several shots. PFW attempted a brief comeback but the Phoenix staved off any momentum for the 64-55 win.

GAME NOTES
» GB had 38 points in the paint compared to PFW's 14.
» The Phoenix held the Mastodons to only 35.1 percent shooting from the field.
» GB had a 34-30 edge on the boards in the win.
» Green Bay got a team-high seven rebounds from Natalie McNeal.
